Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Won't Save New Records

I have a fairly simple page with a grid component on it that has worked fine for months. But in recent days (discovered it yesterday) it quit accepting new records. When the submit button is pressed, it looks like it goes through the motion of inserting a record, but that record never shows up.

The page & component work fine on the local webroot.

Here's the only thing I can think of, and wonder if anyone else has seen this:

I'm publishing with version 7, Build 4130, Addins Build 3033.

The server (at FirmSupport) is running Build/4168-3033.

Could the difference in builds be the cause? Hours of looking and experimenting on my part show no discernible problems, and my question is more urgent with the fact that it works on the local webroot.

    Strange...

You could try to downgrade your develop version?
If the insert problem then still occurs, then it is not caused by the different build.

    My 2 cents,

Well, of course I thought of that, but the version that's there is there for good reasons. Downgrading will only cause troubles elsewhere.

mm ok, but at least you know that it caused(or not) by the different build.

Re: Grid Won't Save New Records

Thought about it some more... I don't think it's the build combinations. I have several web sites all served from the same server at FirmSupport. I've added and updated other grids in the last week with no ill effects. This probably answers the question: "It's unlikely to be a difference of builds." So the basic question has become: "Why has my grid component stopped inserting new records?", at least when it's not on the local webroot.

            Hi Steve,

I had a similar instance with a client. The grid was part of a Grid Linker with tapped comonents. I rebuilt the one component and then it worked. That was the only thing I knew to do. Still don't know why it happened????

This is just a grid. The only unusual thing about it is that all but one field is hidden, and that's used for freeform for all the others. Displays 1 record, allows 1 record for entry. Worked for over a year without trouble. Works on the local webroot.

You know, just a thought, maybe off base?? But since you have hidden fields and the grid linking field is hidden, I wonder if that causes some problems....for what ever reason. Bad internet connection?? or something along those lines?? Maybe why there is no problem on the local webroot?? I don't know....just a thought.

Re: Grid Won't Save New Records

Did you set debug mode to on? What do you see as update syntax when you set the debug mode of the grid?
Grid properties >> Debugging>> check "show update commands" and "execute update commands"

                  - Sometimes the debugmode is unchecked but the execute update commands is also unchecked.
The last option is hidden when the debugmode is unchecked so you won't see it. As result; New rows won't be added to the table.

                  - Perhaps there is a invalid value in the update/insert syntax.

Re: Grid Won't Save New Records

Steve I know this doesn't solve your problem, but you should know you're not alone. I've have several grids lately that have stopped allowing new entries after working fine for some time. So far, they have all been grids which use a memo field with a text area as one of the fields, and are displayed in free form layout.

In all my cases, If I switched from free form layout to a simple tabular grid layout, the problems disappeared. I really need these grids to be in free form, but until a remedy is discoverd, I'll have to leave them this way so they will work.

As a test, I just created a simple grid with only three fields, but in free form layout. Two fields were character, and one was a memo field. I had the memo field set to text area at 850w x 150h.

The resulting grid took ONE new record and that was it. No More. I then changed the design to tabular, and still nothing could be added. I deleted the component, re-built the grid the same way except that this time I used tabular design instead of free form, and it works perfect.

I'm inclined to believe the problem has something to do with the combination of free form and memo fields or large text areas.

I'm just wondering if any of your problem grids use memo fields with large text areas?

Re: Grid Won't Save New Records

                      The plot thickens:

                      - The existing grid wouldnt' allow me to save a record change, in addition to the previous problem of not being able to save a new record.

                      - I created a new grid of different design, loaded it up, and can't create a new record or save changes to an existing one with that, either.

                      - I created an A5W page to change a record, and add a new one without the Grid Component present. Both worked fine.

Current theory: there's a problem with grid components from my current desktop build with the server version of the WAS.

Current theory hitch #1: I can, and have, created other Grid components for other tables/projects with no trouble, and with the current mix of deskstop/server build

Current theory hitch #2: Many other previously-created grids are working just fine.

have you tried to reindex the table and then repack it?
