Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Strange things happening

I am using Alpha 5 V7 build 4130 on Windows 2000 Professional to develop a large application over the past 6 months. About a month ago I noticed some strange things happening which I will try to explain here.

Whenever I am going to make significant changes to a layout, I like to duplicate the layout so I have a backup if I decide not to keep the changes. I do that using the duplicate comman on the context menu and generally name the new layout Old????. What I notice happening now, is if I duplicate a layout name CustomerReport to OldCustomerReport, I end up with OldCustomerReport but I now have 2 or more entries for the CustomerReport layout. This is happening randomly for all types of layouts.

When editing action scripts in various layouts, I am seeing a genie error saying the script was originally defined to operate on form or browse named ???. It then says the window is currently not opened so the action cannot be edited. It gives me the option to select an alternative window to bind the action to but nothing is in the list. This is occuring on action scripts that were developed months ago and on brand new action scripts.

I am suspecting some type of corruption in the application. Can anyone advise on the best course of action in correcting this situation?

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance.

    Re: Strange things happening

    Mark,

As far the problems regarding the extra layouts I have had that happen a few times and figured it was just user error (and most likely was) but have no solution except to simply delete any extra layouts.

The other problem is straight-foreward and the errors you are getting make perfect sense.

Your script obviously refers to a specific form/browse and if you use a differently named form/browse it will generate an error...would not want it any other way would you? Example: If you had to use explicit form names to open up a form or do something with a form's field, say :CustomerReport:field1.value = .....whatever then you would have to change this to :OldCustomerReport:field1.value =... . So check all your script to see where this occurs.

An alternative, of course, would be to duplicate the layout and USE the original to make changes. Then, if you did not like the changes simply delete it and rename the duplicate to what your original layouts name was to get back to square one.

When you run across the error saying a form has to be opened to edit certain things then simply do that! And the little choice box will then list it.

Hope this helps a bit...got to get to work!

      Thanks for replying Mike,

The situation you are describing is straight forward and understandable. I have had this happen when I have duplicated a form and I simply bind the action to the newly named form and everything is fine.

The script genie error I am describes works like this. Create a new layout, say a form, with a couple of fields on it. Create an action script that sets the properties of some of the fields on the form in the OnInit event. Close the code editor to return to the form. Open the OnInit event and select the action script to edit it. Genie error appears. This is not normal.

I have also encountered it on existing forms that I have never duplicated. I've gone back in to change an event and I get the Genie error. There are no layouts available in the alternative selection box to bind the event to.

        Mark,
If you can duplicate the error "on Demand" so to speak then I suggest uploading a sample of the database with step by step instructions as to how to get the error to come up so that others may assist.
I responded as the problems you described were fairly generic and apply to all versions of Alpha. As I am using version 5 I may or may not be able to see the same error as you within said sample database so you would have to hope someone else will come along to help. I would take a look though as many times these errors are not version specific.
