Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Set session variable to current record number

    (Please note that I am referring to grid components and A5W pages running on the WAS.)

    Objective: to set the value of a numeric session variable to the value of the current record number in the active table.

    Structure: In my first A5W page (Page 1.a5w) I have a grid that is set to "Add Records Only." After a new record has been successfully entered (upon a successful Submit operation), Page 1.a5w then redirects to a second A5W page (Page 2.a5w). Page 2.a5w contains a grid that is set to "Allow Update." This grid on Page 2.a5w ONLY updates records in the table-it does not insert or add new records.

    Page 2.a5w contains a filter that selects a record equal to the number of the last record that was added in Page 1.a5w. That filter value in Page 2.a5w is a numeric session variable (session.targetRec_N) that was set in Page 1.a5w.

    Everything is working fine except...I cannot successfully set the value of session.targetRec_N to the current record number. In the CanInsertRecord event of the grid on Page 1.a5w, I currently have the following code:

    tbl=table.current()
    recnum=tbl.recno()
    session.targetRec_N=recnum

    If I comment out the code above and add a line directly below it that assigns a constant to session.targetRec_N (e.g., session.targetRec_N=150) everything works as expected-i.e., the session variable is successfully passed to Page 2.a5w and it is correctly used in the filter expression. So I know the filter on Page 2.a5w is correct and I also know that session.targetRec_N is being passed to Page 2.a5w.

    With what I have now, Page 2.a5w always updates Record = 1 in the table. I just need to set the session variable to the value of the current record in the table.

    Any suggestion, strategies or insights would be greatly appreciated.

    Re: Set session variable to current record number

    I'm not sure where or when the CanInsertRecord fires. But I believe, it cannot detect the current record. This portion of your code cannot work the way you intend within the context of a web page:

    tbl=table.current()
    recnum=tbl.recno()

    Because: the web page is necessarily static and there is no "current" table nor is there a "current" record, nor does the web page no the record # that the server side A5 assigns. The WAS gets the command from the page to write the record, and the server carries it out, but i don't think it works the way your code suggests. I think you have to grab some input value on your web page (like an ID #), pass it to a variable, and then send that filter to your 2nd page.

      Re: Set session variable to current record number

      Hey Peter, thanks for the response. Let me ask....

      If, as you say, the CanInsertRecord event cannot detect the current record then how does the WAS know which record to insert? Does the WAS simply look up the record count for that table and add "1" to generate the record number for that CanInsertRecord event?

      My question is a bit off topic but I found your remark interesting.

        Richard,

        I believe your statement above is correct. The recod # is automatcially assigned by the dbf engine on the server side. It does not yet exist when you submit the new record. Once the server receives the data, it creates a new record # incrementing by 1, as you say. That is why your code idea won't work - as far as I know. You need to grab some unique value that you are inputting on the web page to do what you want. Having said that, there probably is a way to do what you want, but I'm afraid that I don't have an answer for you. Maybe someone else has?

            hi Richard

            just a thought

            if you created a new blank record and then displayed
            the
            Page 2.a5w contains a grid that is set to "Allow Update."
            then you would have the record no and if the user failed to
            submit a proper record simply delete it later
            better for user (1 form to fill in) and you( i form to create)
            i would think

            just a thought
            regards

                Re: Set session variable to current record number

                Richard,

                I struggled with the same isue for a while, and finally came to the following conclusion:

                In some cases, I need to update a linking table as well as the table that the grid is based on. In those cases, I use a dialog component for the data entry, then a grid component for editing.

                If I don't have that extra need, then I just use the grid component set to allow both insert and update.

                The closest I came to accomplishing what you are trying is to use a fetch_last() in the edit page to get the last page, but of course, if y are in a multi-user environment, that could fail.
