Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Migrating A5v4 Application to WASv7

I have a small but sucessfully operating application running on Alpha Five v4. I just purchased Alpha 5 v7 and the Web Application Server v7 and I would like to migrate the application over.

Reading the documentation for WASv7 seems like I'm going to have to start from scratch. Does anyone have a basic outline (I'm not looking for specific instructions) of how to migrate A5v4 to WASv7? I just wanted to try and cut down my development time, since like I'm sure most of you, I'm trying to fit this in with my normal day to day duties.

You're right - it's like starting from scratch. Your tables and existing reports will come in handy, but the rest will be new and have a definite learning curve.

Avail yourself of the help docs, tutorials, and this message board. Get in the habit of using the Search feature here -- there's a real good chance you'll find what you need right away.

OK. I was afraid of that. Thanks very much for your response.

Unless you have a good understanding of HTML and web technology, it's a bear. It's not that Alpha doesn't provide tremendous help and functionality - it does. It's just that if you are like me, coming from a desktop background, it's very difficult to even do simple things - like print the current record (i figured it out studying the posts on this board). I'm not trying to discourage you, I want to go 100% web if that's possible. But it's no cake walk, trust me. People like to put a rosy spin on things, but forget about it! Having said that, I really like Alpha's web components and methodology. It's very cool & exciting (if databaases can even be "exciting"). But it's not easy - unless you have a web background - or your name is Peter Wayne :)

Re: Migrating A5v4 Application to WASv7

          Peter,

Thanks for responding. Sorry for the delay in getting back, but I've been off for a few days.

I do have a smidgen of HTML experience. I maintain four websites (for personal and club activities), however I do it using Microsoft FrontPage. I have occasionally gone into the HTML to tweak things here and there, and that is where the smidgen comes in.

I've done two applications in Alpha Five v4, and they've been very successful, but we only have single seat licenses. We now have a need for occasional multi-user access from anywhere within our corporate LAN, thus the reason for the web based application. My main background is television broadcast engineering and satellite earth station engineering, and creating database applications (computer programming) was a necessary extension of my job duties to assist in the tasks of my employee's duties. I wrote one of the Alpha applications in Alpha Four and successfully re-wrote it for Alpha Five. Now it looks as though I'm going to write it for a third time.

Since Steve Workings reply, I've already started playing around with the Alpha Five v7 web components and am currently struggling with that. I am a little disappointed in the Alpha Software help file; I assume that I'll be back here on the forum quite a bit for reference.

Given your background, sounds like you are in good shape to forge ahead, Sherrel. Best of luck!
