Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    A5v7 Web Component generating errors =>Variable is of different type

    I am inserting a web component created by Alpha5v7 Web Components unmodified into a a5w page. I have tried with different tables. The error is always at line 22 saying variable is of different type. I get the below error:
    Script Error
    Error:Script: /rotra/CatalogVersionFile.a5w line:22
    x_catalogVersion1 = a5w_run_Component(tmpl_catalogVersion1)
    Variable is of different type
    Suggestions would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Old tony

    A5w generated code below:
    <%a5
    Delete tmpl_catalogVersion1
    DIM tmpl_catalogVersion1 as P
    tmpl_catalogVersion1 = a5w_load_component("catalogVersion1a")
    'Following code allows you to override settings in the saved component, and specify the component alias (componentName property).
    'Tip: Keep the componentName property short because this name is used in page URLs, and it will help keep the URLs short.
    'Each component on a page must have a unique alias (componentName property).
    with tmpl_catalogVersion1
    componentName = "catalogVersion1"
    end with
    '=======================================compute the HTML for the Component=======================================
    delete x_catalogVersion1
    dim x_catalogVersion1 as p
    tmpl_catalogVersion1.request = request
    tmpl_catalogVersion1.session = session
    tmpl_catalogVersion1.response = response
    tmpl_catalogVersion1.serversetting = serversetting
    tmpl_catalogVersion1.PageVariables = local_variables()
    'BAD LINE IS BELOW

    x_catalogVersion1 = a5w_run_Component(tmpl_catalogVersion1)
    '=============================================================================================================
    if x_catalogVersion1.RedirectURL <> "" then
    response.redirect(x_catalogVersion1.redirectURL)
    end
    end if
    ?x_catalogVersion1.Output.Head.JavaScript
    ?x_catalogVersion1.Output.Head.CSS_Link
    %>
    <!--Alpha Five Temporary Code Start - Will be automatically removed when page is published -->
    <!--CSS for tmpl_catalogVersion1 -->
    <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="file:///C:\Program Files\A5V7/css/Corporate/style.css">

    Re: A5v7 Web Component generating errors =&gt;Variable is of different type

    Tony,

    Whenever I've gotten that error message, it has meant that the error is in the component named "catalogVersion1a", not in the page. So, that is where I suggest you look. Especially, look at any calculated fields or any events that have Xbasic in them.

      How can a grid created by Alpah5v7 produce an error?

      Here is what i don't get. I am using a grid component created by alpha. No code is added. I simple insert in a a5w page & i get the below error?
      Any thoughts will be appreciated
      thanks

        Re: A5v7 Web Component generating errors =&gt;Variable is of different type

        The second error you listed was for a different component than the first.

        Are you getting this error with every grid, or just one particular grid?

            hi Toney

            just a thought -
            but at one time there was some issue with a component name
            15 characters or longer being truncated

            A5w generated code below:
            <%a5
            Delete tmpl_catalogVersion1
            DIM tmpl_catalogVersion1 as P
            tmpl_catalogVersion1 = a5w_load_component("catalogVersion1a")
            'Following code allows you to override settings in the saved component, and specify the component alias (componentName property).

            'Each component on a page must have a unique alias (componentName property).
            with tmpl_catalogVersion1
            componentName = "catalogVersion1"
            end with
            '=======================================compute the HTML for the Component=======================================
            delete x_catalogVersion1
            dim x_catalogVersion1 as p
            tmpl_catalogVersion1.request = request
            tmpl_catalogVersion1.session = session
            tmpl_catalogVersion1.response = response
            tmpl_catalogVersion1.serversetting = serversetting
            tmpl_catalogVersion1.PageVariables = local_variables()
            'BAD LINE IS BELOW

            x_catalogVersion1 = a5w_run_Component(tmpl_catalogVersion1)
            you might try the above with a shorter component name
            again just a thought
            regards

              Tony,

              I still think the problem is in the grid component, not the page, so here's another idea:

              When you set up a grid, just about eveything defaults to a textbox. Have you gone through the fields and fixed those fields that you want to be logical or checkbox or dropdown? Perhaps doing that (or not doing that) has caused a problem???
