Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Grid Field Property = Link

    I have a read only Grid with one column being a Request ID field (auto increment in a table). I would like to set a Field Property to a Link instead of a Label. In the link properties I have set the following:

    Display What in Link?: Static Text
    Static Text: (Submit an Estimate)
    Link Address Type: Field Value is Link Address
    Target Frame or Window: New Window

    What I think I want is to use the Field Value as a parameter to another page. This page would have a dialog (or maybe a writeable grid) to create a new record in a different table.

    I dont think I want to make the Link Address Type a Detail View Link because I want to add a new record to a different table.

    How can I pass the Field Value as a parameter and go to another page?

    Since you are really trying to create a new record in another table, you can't "link" to it, as it does not yet exist. I suppose you can try putting in xbasic code in the AfterUpdateRecords event to create the new record in the other table in xbasic, and then link to it through the grid.

      Re: Grid Field Property = Link

      Thanks for replying. Just to clarify, I'm not trying to link to another table or record. When someone clicks on the field, I just want to capture the field contents (maybe in a session variable) and then redirect to another a5w page. I can then use a dialog and xbasic to store a new record. The captured field contents will be one of several items stored into this other table.

        Isn't that kind of what I said? I suppose it's the sequence of the steps you want to take that's at issue. If you don't like my suggestion, try using the AfterUpdateRecords to assign the session variable and then go to your other page.

          Sorry if I gave you the impression that I didn't like your suggestion. As you can see from the small number of posts that I have, I'm still new at this. Is the AfterUpdateRecords available on a Read Only Grid?

            Don't worry, I didn't take offence at anything you said.

            Good question. The event appears to be there, but I don't know if it will actually fire, or for that matter, if any of the other events would.

            I always get these things to work by trial and error.

              Make your link look my example in the graphic attached. I used Storename as the link field, you would use RequestID. The URL will look like this:

              ...otherpage.a5w?id=12345

              Your otherpage.a5w would recognise a variable named ID with a value of 12345.

              You would not need anything in the Events area.

                Steve,

                He wants a new record based upon that value in the other page.

                  Re: Grid Field Property = Link

                  Sorry, I stopped short as Kramer would say.

                  The otherpage.a5w would create the new record, with script such as in this example. This takes the ID provided in the URL and uses it in a script to add the record. You could also use the record_add() function if you were only adding one record.

                  But this may not be too effective it there are lots of values that have to be passed in order to create the record. Here I only passed one value, the ID field.

                  Code:
                  dim tbl as p
                  tbl = table.open("<ADB_Path>\store")
                  tbl.enter_begin()
                  	tbl.storename	= ID ' ID is from the URL passed as a parameter
                  	tbl.Added_On	= ctod(startdate)
                  tbl.enter_end()
                  tbl.close()
                  response.redirect("backtoyourgrid.a5w")

                    Steve,
                    I think your idea will work.
                    I made the change to the grid field link and made a quick test page and printed the passed parameter. So, I should be able to do the rest. The table I need to add the new record to only has six fields so that should not be a problem. Thanks.

                      I forgot to add in the last post that this is the only parameter I need to pass to the next page. The other field items will need to come from a dialog. So, this should work.

                        Larry,

                        Here's are answers to two questions you haven't asked yet (Merry Christmas!).

                        To pass more than one parameter, separate them with &, as in

                        Code:

                        ...otherpage.a5w?id=1234&name={namefieldvalue}
                        Then to plug those values into your dialog, use the initialize event. Here's a snippit from one of mine (I used session variables).

                        Code:

                        '****** Initialize Script ******
                        If eval_valid("session.Ev.Title") = .t.
                        CurrentForm.Controls.Ev_Title.value = alltrim(session.Ev.Title)
                        end if
                        If eval_valid("session.Ev.FirstName")=.t.
                        CurrentForm.Controls.vFN.value = alltrim(session.Ev.FirstName)
                        end if
                        If eval_valid("session.Ev.LastName")=.t.
                        CurrentForm.Controls.vLN.value = alltrim(session.Ev.LastName)
                        end if

                          Re: Grid Field Property = Link

                          Time for a Follow Up question.

                          The link to the next A5W page works with the passed parameter. I have some XBasic code in the page and have printed contents of variables on the page.

                          I added a Dialog Component to collect some user input, and it has a Submit Button.

                          When I press the Submit button, the page wants to load again but without the original passed parameter. This gives an error:

                          500 Internal Server Error
                          "Script Error
                          Error:Script: /submit_est.a5w line:74
                          UID = lookupc("F",Req,"User_ID",Tn,"Request_ID")
                          Variable "Req" not found."

                          Is this a problem with the page being sent to the server, or reloaded to the user screen? How do I get the original passed parameter to be passed again (when the submit button is pressed)?

                            When you pass the parameter in the URL, use session.Req instead of just Req. The variable will then exist until the browser is closed or times out. Then:

                            UID = lookupc("F",sessionReq,"User_ID",Tn,"Request_ID")

                            Tn should include reference to "<ADB_Path>" if it doesn't already.
