Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Copying Databases

I have just backed-up my database on one pc, sent it via email to a 2nd pc. When I open the 2nd pc database, some of the tables are "greyed-out" and when I try to open them, nothing happens. When I then try to open a form which contains these tables, the error message "The system cannot find the path specified" and the path shown is the one on my old pc.

I have tried to search in vain in Alpha 5 where I can reset the paths. Can anyone advise?

    Thanks

Check the control panel, detail view, tables/sets tab of your original database. Most likely the tables that are unavailable on the second pc are in different directories than the others. Did you use the built in Alpha backup utility or did you just zip up the directory in windows?

You change the paths to tables by dropping them from the control panel, moving them in explorer, then adding them in the control panel. I would do this in the original database and resend it.

Thanks for your reply. I had a look at where the tables were situated and they were in different folders. I have since moved them all to the same folder. The only problem now is that when I open a form, it complains that it is looking to a different folder (i.e. the one from which I moved them) and cannot open the form. Is there a way of redirecting the form to pick up the table in the now corrected directory?

        To quote myself...

You indicate that you moved them. Did you perform the other two steps?

          Re: Copying Databases

All is ok now. It was by making sure that the tables were in the same directory on pc1 and then sending them (using Alpha 5 Tools Send Database) to pc2 that on pc2 all the tables (after unzipping) were sent to the same folder. After this, I had to do a couple of things in the pc2 database: 1) Remove a 'Set' (which was still pointing to the old path) and re-creating it. Also 2), after removing the table set, a form had actually vanished, so I re-did the form. As it is a very small database and I am trying out certain things in Alpha5, it was easy to re-create. I am glad that I made the mistake at this stage of building this database and am grateful to you for your kind and timely advice.

          Many thanks.

Glad it worked out. You're right that it is easier to recover from some of the pitfalls at the early, experimental stage.
