Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report grouping

Does anyone have an expression (or a method) that will give grouping by quarters???
I am grouping by month by breaking on 'cmonth(date)'. There is only one date in the payroll table and I need to break down the IRS data by month and by quarter to match their required information....

    What I envision is

    week1data week1data1 etc etc
    week2data etc etc
    week3data etc
    week4data

    month1summ month1summ1

    weeks.....

    month2summ......

    weeks....

    month3summ......

    quarter1summ....
    .
    .
    .
    quarter4summ....

    annualsumm

The only expression I can come up with requires using the 'mod' function to determine when the quarter number changes, but I have yet to make it work.

The original report was merely a reporting of weekly data with an annual summary....

    TIA

    On a calendar year basis

    Code:
    case(between(month(date),1,3),1,between(month(date),4,6),2,between(month(date),7,9),3,between(month(date),10,12),4)
Shouldn't your month grouping be by month(date) rather than cmonth(date)? Cmonth(date) will sort

    April
    August
    etc

    instead of

    January
    February
    etc.

        Re: Report grouping

Thanx much for the insight, Stan. I have now been able to use group 1 as the quarters and group 2 as the months -- everything comes together just fine...

        EXCEPT

I cannot get A5 to let me make new variables to total the months. Every time I type in a new variable, it types in OK but disappears when I click on the OK button. Tried using the 'xy' and the 'V' but neither will take what I am using to total the groups.

        mngross = total( pr_gross_wages,grp->monthly_break )

        or

        mngross = total(e_payroll_data->pr_gross_wages,grp->monthly_break)

monthly_break is the name of the break group

If I type in 'mngross = 0', the variable is created; but any kind of calculation involved and it just disappears on leaving the 'xy' screen.

Have not yet tried to total each quarter, that's next.

I do have ytd totals that work but they're running totals in the report footer.

If anyone has a place to look or an idea why it's happening, please let me know.

You are saying "vairable" but you should be using report level calculated fields. Which are you trying to create?

I'm using the 'xy' screen from the report..
Guess that would be 'report level variables'.

I can create running totals for the paycheck data but not a monthly total

            weird.....................

The xy leads to the calculated field builder, the V leads to variables.

Let Alpha build the total expression for you. With the drag-drop list visible, click on a single field you want totaled for the month, drag it into the month group footer, when the summary expression genie appears, specify total.

                Re: Report grouping

Well, I didn't think it would be that easy.

I have tried to create a 'variable' to total the monthly data for the various paycheck fields from all three of the available sources, 'xy', 'V', and drag and drop from the 'new calculated fields' area.

Also just tried to do as you suggested in your last response.

Sorry, no cigar...... the value I receive when doing as you suggested, is the annual total of all of the paychecks. This is the same thing that I have been running into whenever I have tried to 'build' a total based on the 'monthly group break'. Either I get the total of ALL paychecks or the variable is not created.......

Either I have done something wrong when I built the form or the grouping
                -OR-
                well, I have no idea......

Thanx for the help, so far, I'm still researching for an answer.

Wait a minute -- gotta go check out again.... I misread what you said.

                Back later

Ok it was that simple -- thanx again Stan
