Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Generating a Word document

    Hi,

    I need to generate a report in Word format. This report includes free text and
    crosstabs from multiple tables. When created, it should present the document in edit mode for user to edit, preview, print or save (very much like the report output generation of A5).

    What is the best way to to do this ? It appears what I need is the "ole.create" command for Word but can't seemed to find much info. or examples for this command.

    Can anyone help ?

    Thanks.

    Re: Generating a Word document

    Why do you want it in Word?

    Try an advanced search on keys "word ole.create". One of the results is this thread.

    Word macro.

    Read the help about ole.getobject() and ole.create(). You need knowledge about the Word object model and the VBA macro language.

    An Excel examples (just for the code)

      I didn't delve too much into this, but how is that different from saving a report as an RTF?

      When created, it should present the document in edit mode for user to edit
      That will apply to any Word document.

        Hi Marcel,

        Thanks for replying to my thread.

        The reason for creating the report in Word is to allow the user to customise the report where required.

        The report consists of free text (which the user can change) and includes crosstabs from multiple tables. From what I can tell, this report is too complicated to be generated in A5 using "Reports".

        Very much appreciate your help and will check out the links you suggested.

        Thanks again.

        Regards,

        Wombat

          Hi Gabriel,

          As mentioned above, I believe the report is too complicated to use A5 "Reports".

          I presume whether creating the report in Word or RTF format will require XBasic programming, right ? If so, what XBasic statements will I need to
          create RTF files ?

          I am very new to Alpha 5 !

          Thanks.

          Regards,

          Wombat

            No.
            When you preview the report, choose: file, save as. A window with different choices will appear. Choose: Word (Or RTF).

              Try this...

              Code:
              'This function creates a new Word document

              FUNCTION Word_new_Document AS L (docName AS C)
              	Dim wordApp As p

              	wordApp = ole.Create("Word.Application")
              	wordApp.WindowState = 1 'wdWindowStateMaximize
              	wordApp.Documents.Add()
              		'write to the file here to create your report
              		'as many lines as you want
              	wordApp.ActiveDocument.SaveAs(docname) ' default is Word document
              	WordApp.Quit()

              	Word_New_Document = .T.

              	delete wordApp

              END FUNCTION

              ' usage is like   Word_New_Document("p:\yourreportname.doc")
              wordApp.Documents.New() should be wordApp.Documents.Add()

                  Not wanting to seem like I am jumping on something, but How could it be too complicated? If you are creating everything in A5 and then sending it to word? Unless it is remarks added after the report, Alpha should be able to handle it. Reason I asked, I helped a programmer with something like this a few years ago and found it was his not being able to do a math function in the language, so he put it in another program and did his math on a calculator. It was complcated math with a lot of steps.

                  Just trying to learn something.

                      In case you are wondering......

                      the section to write to the word document would look something like (between the .add() and the .saveas())

                      Code:
                      wordApp.ActiveDocument.Content.Select()
                      	wordApp.Selection.Collapse(0) ' zero parameter collapses selection to end of selection
                      	tbl = table.open("towns",FILE_RW_EXCLUSIVE) 'my tablename hardcoded here
                                                                             'table has fields City and Friend, used below
                      	tbl.fetch_first()
                      	while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
                      		wordApp.Selection.InsertAfter(tbl.City+chr(9)+alltrim(tbl.Friend)+crlf()) 'chr(9) is tab character
                      		wordApp.Selection.Collapse(0)
                      		tbl.fetch_next()
                      	end while
                      	tbl.close()
                      There can be only one.

                        Hi Stan,

                        You are ahead of me ! I was going to ask you what the code (that you did not earlier specify) looks like !

                        One last query - after the report is formatted, is it possible to open the Word document to display on the screen ready for
                        the user to edit, save or print ?

                        Thanks again, Stan.

                          Try something like the following:

                          Code:
                          'Inline-Xbasic. Converted from: Open file.
                          Dim filename as c
                          ' uncomment this if you would like alpha to prompt you for a filename.
                          'filename = ui_get_file("Enter name of file to open","Files (*.*)")

                          filename = "you path here"   ' i.e. "c:\yourfile.doc"
                          if file.exists(filename) then
                             sys_open(filename)
