Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Opinion Of Set Design

First off I want to give appreciation to all who've helped others in the past, reading your responses has helped me immensely with my current project. I've literally spent hours reading and it has saved me several times from deadly frustration. :) Now on to my questionaire.

In my program I'm using a number of critical tables loaded with information. I could go either of two ways, my first option is to Open Forms from buttons on a Dummy Welcome/Main form. Another option, and this is where I need input, is Linking all tables together with a central table we'll call "Settings". From the Settings Set, the Program can control every link attached to it. In effect it makes my set design look like a star. I've attached a picture of how I am setting it up, but I would like to know how some other people have designed their Programs, and if this idea is feasible. On my initial test of a Central Form I used a Conditional Object for the centerpiece and a Multi-State Button at the bottom to Move To different areas I've created. This ended up working correctly, however It was more cumbersome and sluggish than other designs. Is this because of Set Linking Limitations? Amount of Records to sift through and link together? I think you get where I'm going with this. Is it something you're tried and if so, how did you get it work smoothly.

Any positive response would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Dan,
Housekeeping. Alpha5v7 is a program. You are designing a database (a collection of tables, forms, browses, reports and operations).
I could go either of two ways
Looking at your set, I'm thinking the number of ways you can go is in the 1000s. The one thing that is absolute is that this database is going to be multi-user access on a network, understand this MONSTER SET is not recommended. Dr. Peter Wayne wrote an article found at www.learn alpha.com on this subject. I dont have the link at the moment, but it details that big sets in a multiuser environment is a troublesome composition.

Among the many questions needed answering to advise about database design, what is your situation. And by the way... there is a separate forum on this message board for database design.

From what I understand so far about Alpha (only with Alpha for 3 months) is you do not want to do that. When you have a set like that all the tables are open when ever the set is open. If I remember correctly Alpha states to keep the sets small when possible. I would say your first idea is better.

Now that I have said this we will see if others that have been using Alpha for a while agree.

Your set is much too complex. You need to simplify. There is no compelling reason to link all your tables into one monstrous leviathan. Check out Peter Wayne's site. He has an article written for you - it's called "Simplifying your application" - or something like that.

Excellent clarity, I've read Dr. Wayne's Article and come up with alternatives to my desired plan. :) Once again Thank you.
