Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Lookup changing case of letters

I've created a lookup using an xdialog and the edit combo box command.

    [%KE=Index/Query_Name%.Size VariableName] - edit-combo box

If you look at the first attached jpg, look at the 2nd line.
Then look at the 2nd jpg and compare.

The original data right from the table is of the correct case. The lookup is changing the case of certain letters in certain records. Most records are correct. But no matter how many times I run the lookup, the same record has the same letters case reversed.

It happening to more than just this one record. There are only 1529 records in this table. I checked and in the lookup list, I saw at least 14 records in the list where the case of some of the letters had been changed. There may have been more, I can't be certain as I'm not that familiar with the data. But the customer is complaining.

    I'm at a loss.

    Ron,

is the customer copying and pasting material into this field from an exernal source? Might it have control codes embedded within it? Do the errant records have a common source? Is the process used to enter the field data different for the 14 errant records?

I haven't seen this problem before and have no clue whether these questions will actually help. They're offered in hopes that maybe they'll give you some ideas.

Is the first jpg the data from the source not having to do with the lookup? Is the second jpg the data as copied over or as it is showing? I don't think I understand the jpg's.

Re: Lookup changing case of letters

I put together a test database that you should be able to run and see what is happening. In addition, I submitted this as a possible bug as the same happens in A5V8.

Usually when I submit a bug report, the error ends up on my side. I'm just looking for an answer.

You have a field rule on discrepancy = word
That could change things a bit.

There are a number of errors in the code at line 60, 61 etc. I will try later to correct. There are variables missing.

Re: Lookup changing case of letters

I received this reply from Selwyn:

The reason that you have the bug is that you are using all 250 characters of the field in the defintion of the record list. Alpha Five uses the last few characters in a key to maintain case information. But since your have use the full 250 characters in your definition, A5 has no room.

You can work around the problem by changing the xbasic script as follows (see part marked in blue):

            vDiscrepancy_rl_def = "ke=msquawk,{keylist_build(\"H=.025,1:70[Desc]\",''+Desc,left(''+Desc,150))}{.t. .and. unique_key_value()}"

Higher values might work - but it certainly must be less than 250

So I'm going to give Selwyn suggestion a try.

As far as the rest of the code, this test database was extracted from a much larger application that does far more than the test example. So the other errors were not of concern.

            Thanks,

            Ron
