Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    missing records issue

running from xppro wkstation to server2003 server

periodically losing parent records when returning from entering a child record in a child-enter-form. note, too, that the child records exist, but as orphans, as the parent is gone.

my reasoning is there can only be 2 logical explanations

    1. the parent is being erroneously reassigned to a different key when returning due to bad code, etc.
    2. the record is being deleted

I have pretty well eliminated both possibilities. I have "undeleted" all records, and it ain't there. And I have gone to great lengths to ensure the parent isn't moving/jumping.

I have heard of indexes being corrupted from opportunistic record locking issues, but never records literally disappearing.

Has anyone ever heard of anything like this?

    Re: missing records issue

    Martin,

Doesn't it follow that a corrupted index would not cause the record to disapear except in the index? Would the record be there and just not showing? A reindex may work or possibly moving only the dbf file to a different location and re-opening it with no indexes would show the lost record?

I have never lost records like that before.

    I hope I helped somehow.

      Re: missing records issue

      Thanks Dave.

Well, I have already rebuilt the indexes before I even start to explore.

We have a call into IT to see if they will create and set keys for opportunistic locking. Last night, a call to the 24 hr IT people revealed that the keys do not exist - so they assumed that that meant it was not enabled. But according to the white paper if the keys don't exist, you have to create them and set them to off. Anyway, the larger IT department is going to let us know later if they will do that. But its a really big operation and our program is a wee tiny consideration.

Which has me ask a question I have been wondering about since V6 was announced, a few years ago - namely, if the Alpha web browser depends on opportunistic record locking, and on a LAN Alpha software needs it turned off - does that create a problem?

        Re: missing records issue

        Martin,
Athird logical explanation is that the record was never added to the parent table in the first place. Are you absolutely sure that the parent record has been successfully added and that you are passing the correct parent linking field value to your child new record routine? In the can enter event of the field rule of the child record , try checking for the existence of the parent record. It doesn't sound to me like it is an index corruption problem, so limiting yourself to testing opportunistic locking variations might not be fruitful. It sounds to me like there is a bigger missing piece to your puzzle.

I see what you mean - but this is occasionally occuring when there are existing children for an existing parent!! and they are adding a new child.
The orphaned children are still there, when I view the child table from the default browse, but the parent has totally disappeared.

          Its totally bamboozeling(sp)!

            Re: missing records issue

is referential integrity set to on? and is it possible someone could delete the parent record if the referential integrity is set to off and then pack the database? I know it could and has happened to me, but my referential integrity is on, so the shildren are gone to. I have a utility for the end user to pack the database.

another thought? if someone was working on a child table on a form called b the parent, could someone delete the parent record during that time and would the child still be there?

I still think you can do some more useful troubleshooting by checking for the existence of the parent record in the canenter field rule event of the child.
Alert the user of the problem with a message to contact you immediately, and when they call , any special circumstances that occurred will be fresh on their mind.

IT said they would enter and set the keys for opp rec locking. Will see if that makes any difference.

Ref integity is off. No one can get to the control panel. No one can delete records without the record being copied to a "delete table."

I have added one new safeguard - In the candeleterecord event in f-rules for the parent, I cancel() unless they are in a specific form - where there is a button which deletes and moves all related records to the "delete" tables.

IT said they can't restart the server until Wednesday, when there is a schedule for it - so by Monday I will know something.

                      Re: missing records issue

the adb was apparently corrupted - when I opened the database, went to the controlpanel, and tried to pack the table it would not pack. When I tried to compact the database, it said the table was open-in use.

I made a new database - that fixed it. I suspect opportunistic record locking as the cause.
