Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Not sure I know what you mean. Your link is to the help file index.

If you mean you are trying to set the field types in a browse, you don't. You set the field types in a table. A browse is only a means of viewing a table. If you have an existing table you can use the Table Editor to change the structure.

If you want to create a new table from scratch, here's the way.

I think you may be misinterpreting the instructions.

You don't add a drop down list to a browse. You add a field to a browse and you can define it such that you can make data entry selections from a drop down list.

You may well be following the action sequence but I'll restate to be sure. While viewing the control panel, choose an existing browse, right click on it and choose Design, access the View menu and select Drag-Drop list. Select a field from the list and click-drag it into position.

If you do not see the Drag-Drop list when performing these steps, you may need to exit Alpha and restart or reboot your machine. After long periods of database design, resources often become fragmented and the genies become balky.

I am doing all this but i have no choice to define it such that it can make data entry selections from a drop down list.
I can not open up the Fields panel to be able to define it???
all i get is a properties panel with no way to select a combo drop list

Not really. The drop down shown is defined in the field rules for the invoice items table, product id field. It has nothing to do with defining a field type for the column in the browse.

The process is outlined in the AlphaSports Explained .chm file under "coded lookup".

                Using a Coded Lookup Field

A coded lookup field stores one field while displaying another. The Invoice form shows an example of the value of coded lookup fields in its embedded browse. The left-most column of the browse displays the description field from the invoice_items table. This effect is achieved through Field Rules. This is how it was done in the AlphaSports sample database:

Open the Field Rules for the invoice_items table.

Display the Lookup tab the product_id field.

Set Lookup styles to "Table lookup".

Set the Table field to the name of the table that will provide the field to display.

In Linking Field select the field that connects the invoice_items table to the product table. This is the product_id field.

Enter the expression that will order the entries in Display Order field. This is not strictly necessary, but since the description field will be displayed, it makes sense to sort the entries alphabetically.

If there was a reason not to display all description fields that match product_id fields, you could also have a filter expression in the Filter field. [Picture]

Enter the linking field from the product (source) table in the first row of the Source column.

Enter the linking field from the invoice_items (destination) table in the first row of the Fill column.

                Set Display to "No".

Enter the display field from the product (source) table in the second row of the Source column.

Since you are not saving the description field in the invoice_items table, there is no entry in the Fill column.

                Set Display to "Yes".

Check the Display as Drop-down list box check box. [Picture]
