Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Triggering fields with popups to pop up

I would like to have, in an OnChange event of field #1, a jump to a field #2 that will then activate field #2's popup/pulldown so the list of choices is immediately visible after the user selects the choice on field #1. The popup choices for field #2 will depend on the field #1 choice selected.

I am using the "set insertion point in a field" to jump to the correct field, but it only lands on that field, it does not push the arrow at the right side of the field that will then bring up the list.

Do you know of an Action Script or xBasic command that will bring up the field #2 popup as soon as the field #1 choice is clicked? I searched but couldn't find anything. Thank you.

Have you tried sending the keyboard shortcut sequence to Alpha Five once focus in the desired field is achieved? Sys_send_keys() might do the trick for you.

You are not indicating what does pop up? is it a lookup table? is it set in field rules? If so, choose "Popup on enterance"

If it is a script, I suppose you could put it in the OnArrive Event.

        From Tom:

        Tom,

I did consider this, but what keys am I sending? I tried something that sends the {enter} key, but it doesn't pop up. The popup is defined in field rules with pop up on entrance, but I don't seem to be able to pop it up. The idea is to create the equivalent to clicking on the right side arrow. Any thoughts?

          Gabriel,

It is a lookup table defined in field rules, with "pop up on entrance"? You're suggesting putting it in OnArrive, but what is it that I should put in OnArrive? Bear in mind that I have, in OnDepart from field #1, the achieving of focus on field #2. But then what do I provide that will cause the lookup table to come up?

          Thanks.

If you chose "popup on enterance", it should popup once it gets focus. Are you not getting this result?

Re: Triggering fields with popups to pop up

              Gabriel,

Here's what I have. In field #1, I have an OnChange event set up to "set insertion point" to 1 in field #2. The field rule for field #2 has a table lookup with Popup on entrance set. I guess the question is, does "set insertion point" qualify as an "entrance"? This does not work, so is there another command other than "set insertion point" that you think will work?

              Thanks.

                field2.activate()

Re: Triggering fields with popups to pop up

field2.activate() does the same as set insertion point, i.e., it goes to the field but does not stimulate the popup to action.

I just tested it, it works fine. I don't know if you have some other scripts that might interfere with that.

Re: Triggering fields with popups to pop up

Are you entering a new record or modifying an existing? In my case, I'm modifying an existing and want to cover that possibility.

Also, what event are you working with? Is it an OnChange event in the first field? OnDepart in the first field? OnArrive in the second field?

In the table lookup field rule for the second field, I'm sure you have popup on entrance, but do you also have Popup on mismatch for exceptions?

                      Thanks.

Re: Triggering fields with popups to pop up

It automatically pops up on entering a new record, whether you go to field2 by tabing to it or clicking the mouse on it.

On changing an existing record, it will popup if you mouse click to the field, but not if you tab to it.

I am not using any events.

                          Gabriel,

I'm not worried about how it works when you tab or click. I'm trying to make this happen under program control. This thing works if it's a new record, i.e., the popup happens simply by having it put focus on the second field. My interest is in having this happen when it is in edit mode. This is what I'm having trouble with when using an event, like OnChange, to achieve focus and create the popup.

                            here is an example.
Notice the difference if you check/uncheck "display as drop down list box."

Threre was a thread regarding this issue recently.
See if this suits you, if not, my suggestion and always my preference, is to create your own lookup.

I think the onchange is too late. What about the onarrive event?
