Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha4v8 File Recovery

I am desperate for help recovering a dbf file from a previous date. My WindowsXP System Restore isn't working but I did purchase a program that recovers deleted files, which the file I need did come show up but can't recover it because it wasn't deleted. I really messed up and deleted a years worth of records and am unable to re-enter in the time frame I have.

This is not a business. I built this database program for my farm and need it for my taxes.

    Can anyone help me?

    Thank you,
    Linda L.

    Linda;
Did you actually delete the records or simply "mark" them for deletion?

You need to look for a utility that has an unzap (dbase, dbf, foxpro) rather than an undelete feature. You also need to not use the system that has the file/table on it until it is fixed.

dsalvage is one. There are others also. You should boot the system off a cd or floppy and run the recovery software from there rather than from the drive holding the file to recover.

If you have continued to work on the system, you run into a greater risk of over-writing the area that you want to recover.

Do you mean when I save the file? To save it to a different drive?
My program is on Drive C: but my files are on Drive F:.

With the other recovery program, I copied the file to a different drive. Will this other software repair it from there?

          Thank you,

Yes the program will recover a file on a different drive.

You don't want any additional file activity on that drive until the file is repaired. Making new files, adding to other files may over write the area of the disk that you are trying to recover.

"DBF Recovery" is shareware, will that work? The others I looked at are way out of my price range.

Sorry, I have no experience with DBF Recovery.

                  Re: Alpha4v8 File Recovery

                  HI,
Although I am not faimiliar with DBF recovery software I have used many other forms of recovery software. One thing to note--just because one software does not recover your data (or even find it!) does not mean others cannot. I have 5 different softwares for normal data (not just for DBF) and have had many times when only 1 or 2 actually get my data back at any given time...and what worked last time won't the next. They all use different ways to see and/or retrieve the data.

So---if what you are using does not work definitely try another. Many have trial or demo downloads that at least you will know if they work or not in their ability to find or fix your lost data.
