Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Database connection errors: SQL API-related?

I'm trying to set up a new data base by importing data from pre-stored data files. I have been getting error messags doing this. Here are the conditions, and here are the error messages--all deal with my attempting to set up a new Alpha Database using pre-existing data files (I'm using A5V8):

    1. Creating database from imported data
Selection: Microsoft Access Datbase [Comment: mdb file]

    After pressing OK:

Could not conenct to remote database. Error reported was: "The SQL API you requested is not installed."

    2. Creating database from imported data
Selection: Excel File [Comment: xls file]

Result? Same error message as in 1, above.

    3. Using ADO Import Genie
Attempting to inport Excel spreadsheet results in following error message:

    ADO Returned the following error:
Coulld not connect to Database. ADO reported the following error:
[Microsoft] [ODBC Excel Driver] Couldnot decrypt file.

    =========

Just trying things out, I also tried activating "Other" in the Select Database menu, and when the "Define Connection String to Connect to your Database" button appeared, as a result, pressing that button resulted in the following error message: "Error! No SQL APIs are available."

I have a hunch that all the the other error messages are due to the condition just described: SQL APIs not being installed/available.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated.

    John:

Has this thread been moved? or has no one replied?

I searched the board for the exact same error and came upon your thread, and was wondering if anyone had chimed in to help.

I did the exact same thing you did, and got the same results. I am using A5v8, Professional Edition.

I'll wager that the first response will be that we will have to upgrade to Enterprise in order to do this.

I posted "where's the speed" back in May, got a few responses, but after my final post which revealed A5V8's true sluggishness when it comes to ODBC imports, I have received no replies.

    I am waiting with ya...........

Do you have MS Access installed or the Jet engine files installed on the computer where the .mdb files resides? Just a thought....

I can't speak for jbooth, but i do have MS Access 2003 and the jet engine files installed on the same computer, same drive as the .mdb, however the .mdb is in a directory that is not a subdirectory of the access directory.

I can access and manipulate the data in the .mdb with Access.

          jbooth:

I was able to pull in all my tables from the Access .mdb file via ODBC, using the ADO genie.

It appears that the "Create Database from Imported Data" function uses the AlphaDAO model to try and pull the data in, and that apparently is something reserved for Enterprise users only.

If someone could please verify my above assumption, i think it would answer both jbooth's and my question :).

            You are correct sir.

AlphaDAO is part of Alpha Enterprise edition.
