Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Assign Value to a field in a child table

This should be easy but I am a newb and I have been frustrated for quite a while.

I have a set. In the child browse I have a logical field called select. I just would like to have a button on the form for "Select All" "Select None". This would make all the logical child records either .t. or .f.

    ALSO

Similar but slightly different. I would like to have a button that would prompt for a date and change a date field in only the child records where select is =.t. and recalc the field rules.

I would really appreciate help on this. This should be simple but I am not seeing the forest through the trees.

    John,

I have done this by running a saved update operation from a button--one for tagging (true) and another for untagging (false) logical fields.

On your second question my approach would be similar---most likely setting the selected date to a variable and then running a saved update operation for records that match your query...setting the date fields equal to the variable.

That worked, thanks. I knew there was an easy way. Thanks again.

        John,

Another approach would involve getting a pointer to the open child table and then fetching through the linked records, updating them one by one if the filter criteria are satisfied. This would eliminate the need to run a saved update operation against another instance of the same table.

          Tom,

Would you mind expanding on your previous message, and possibly giving a somewhat working example/explanation? For some of us less experienced,

            Shawn,
The attached is an example of what you requested, and I believe what Tom was describing. The database is a 1:M Parent:Child, and should open to a form with parent and child. The Parent contains states (regions). The child contains multiple entries for each state. The red button has the script example. It sequences through two text dialog boxes, each having a default entry. In the first, just add a number at the end to complete it (make it wild to see the change), and in the second, it will default to "A", so just press the OK button. The second In-Line Xbasic Action Script in the button On-Push event directs the action of coursing throught the records of the child table and change each child record as Tom described.

            Hope this helps.

Here's another example. Unzip the attachment to an empty folder. Open Form1. There are two buttons. These illustrate another approach to updating field values in the child table records linked to the current parent table record.

Mike Wilson uses a similar approach but employs a query to limit the range of child table records to be processed. I step through all the child table records evaluating each as I go, without running a query.

John, if you need to process all child table records (not just those linked to the current parent table record), then MikeC's saved update operation is probably a better approach.

                Tom,
Nice example. It was a learning experience for me in seeing that if t.adopted is all you need and the equation = .T. is implicit for the logical field.

For completeness sake, RED is not showing in the listbox because it resides in the code position for the default_number.
                Code:
                [COLOR="Blue"]'user selects color from list[/COLOR]
                New_color = ui_get_list("Pick new color",[COLOR="Red"]1[/COLOR],"Red","Blue","Green","Orange", "Orange and Blue","Go Gators")
                if New_color = "" then [COLOR="Blue"]'user chose cancel[/COLOR]
                	end
                end if

Thanks for the examples Tom and Mike... once I solve a very frustrating problem with Alpha running on Vista (so far no one at Alpha has responded to my desperate plea for help), I'll take a look at your postings...
