Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Passive link table in multi user situation

I was experimenting with the Passive Link Table feature
and have sync few tables successfully and with "ease"

However, in the multi user situation, when user "x" was browsing
or simply in the read only situation, while I am trying to perform
a refresh, this is definately a "no no"/

Is there anyway, to allow the refresh to run on it's own based
on timer or other triggering method, keep in mind other user still
viewing the data(s) in read only setting/

My immediate conclusion is to try mirror the passive link to another portable
table, while keeping the passive link free of any user, enabled it to
refresh on timer say at every 60 seconds

Can someone offer any suggestion, before i go for the mirror concept

    thanks

Re: Passive link table in multi user situation

    Hi Ken,

    Long time no see!

    From the docs...
    --------------------------------------------
    Refreshing a Passive Linked Table

To retrieve all of the data that a passive-linked table specifies with its SQL SELECT statement:

Display the Tables/Sets tab of the Control Panel.

Right click on a passive-linked table and select Utilities > Refresh Data in Passive Link Table... > Yes. This will delete all records in the table, then retrieve a new set of records.
    --------------------------------------------
I think that last line kind of explains it. The file gets deleted first. So I think the solution is to refresh a separate table and do an update from there.

Re: Passive link table in multi user situation

        Ken

The information in your passive linked table sounds like it's shared with multiple users and updated on a regular basis while the users are operating on the database.

In that case, you'll need to treat the passive-linked table just like an imported table. Mirroring that information in another table for the users is certainly one of the ways to go.

It may take multiple steps to resynch the data if you have new, changed, and deleted records. New and changed can be handled by an update operation - add unique and replace existing. If a record is removed, either a record status needs to change or the mirrored table needs to look back at the passive-linked/imported table and verify that each record should still be there..

Or depending on the source, you may be able to send transaction records (add this record, update this record, delete this record) instead of the whole table. But those are the ideas in theory.

Re: Passive link table in multi user situation

          Thanks Al,

I am convined the passive, as it said on the title "passive"
so the idea to create a seperate mirror table is a must for my case/

I like the passive refresh, is many times faster that i do it
with sql connect and populate my databse, in the case of 5000 records

i need 2 to 3 minutes over VPN slow speed, while doing passinve refresh
only takes less than 1 minute, that is amazing

I am trying making sure such refresh is working at all times.
I have set up a lab to continously refresh every 90 seconds
and it has been running for about 3 hours already/

so far no error and it is encouranging

          thanks

            Ken

So you are doing this as a single refresh on a server and then each user doesn't have to refresh it on their machine?

Should work well. I've done that with imported tables and passive linked tables and prefer the passive linked tables.
