Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Application Showcase

    Hi Richard,

Of course you know that I'm all for this. I truly believe that key software (and hardware for that matter) like Alpha 5 is not truly defined by the creator, but by the number of 3rd party items available for it.

There are many Alpha 5 applications out there, although I'm not sure how many of them are truly refined for distribution. But, then again, there's a lot of 3rd party junk being offered for other database products, and Alpha 5 applications would probably fare very well against others.

However in the Utilities and Tools arena, there are currently only 3 (that I know of) Alpha 5 developers producing released products. Those are
I strongly encourage other Alpha 5 application developers to consider purchasing those tools and utilities that fit their needs, otherwise these type of products will dry up.

And trust me, the costs are cheap compared to the time savings and Return on Investment for you! Most of these tools involved 100's....make that 1000's of man-hours in development, yet few have purchased any of the above. There is no way you could even come close to the quality, adaptability or reliability in your own code that did similar things.

Ira, I think that this is a perfect example of areas that need to be brought to the foreground. As you pointed out very few have purchased - part of the reason has to be that there is no shortage of material in the forums as far as reading goes - but, not everyone has the time to absorb all the material offered up in a text environment. I went to each of the links you provided and will pursue (purchase) each of these tools once I can get my project past the "on spec" stage.

I would encourage you to consider providing a camtasia/encoder overview in which the significant benefits can be gone over and the user community can capture the passion and conviction that motivated you to generate your solution. You might want to also consider one that focuses on how "functions" are such a terrific tool in the Alpha 5 arsenal. I know it takes a bit of time to do one but realistically it may be quicker in a lot of cases to do an encoder session than to sit and type and try to convey what may be much more readily communicated visually and verbally.

And by the way, this is in no way intended to diminish the appreciation for the contribution you and others make in the forum. I just feel that it would be another venue that could help leverage the community's knowledge base.

My camtasia version (which I might point out that I introduced at the 1st Alpha 5 conference in 2000 as a recorder that was real efficient in space - potentially you can fit 20 hours on a CD) is in development, but it takes time to develop the examples to show that are not particularly extraneous, or show proprietary info (a big problem for me!)

I have talked about aspects of using functions at almost every Alpha 5 conference and will be at the upcoming one. It's one of the things I have considered for the web, but time is at a premium for the free things unfortunately, so I'm not sure when it might happen. I don't see much return in terms of clients. I have written many specilaized complex functions for other A5 developers (whose names I won't/can't mention), but it doesn't really account for a significant income stream unfortunately.

But thanks for all your kind words and support. Each version of A5 just gets better!

              It has

              contact management
              Invoicing
              appointments
              alerts
              Groups
              Password keeper
Map and UPS tracker so far
              Memo
              Paid Calendar add on
              Custom day view of appointments.
              Tracking other service people.
              A lot of other things

              Still working on

              Reports
              Quick contact form
A second version of a password tracker for web sites
Adding in fedex to shipping tracking
              TO DO tracker
              Color coding some things
              CC keeper
              Custom menus

Things i want to add later.

Keeping track of all business purchases with reports.
              Printing checks.
A way to import in new customer leeds from a web site form e-mail sent to me from a form on a web site the new customer (lead) fills in.
Adding look up web site address to the Activex web site window.
Make a full version of all this that works on the web.

Boy i have a long way to go it looks like..

I have used a lot of the new v8 design items

A lot of people here in the chat room and others have helped me a lot to get to the point i am at.

I do not know what CRM is?

              Why do you ask ??

CRM stands for "Customer Relation Management".
You might even be able to sell the app later, so the efforts are never gone besides you learning things very fast in this way.

                Kind regards,

                Marcel
