Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Runtime is driving me Mad!

    Hi Guys,

I have A5 V5 full version and V5 Runtime (3 users) and I am trying to creat a Runtime version of an application. In the Developer version I do not have the fopllowing option:

    > From the Control Panel, select Tools > Utilities > Create Install Package.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks
    Andy

There's no indication you've searched the message board. This has come up before. I think you'll find useful threads. If memory serves the runtime needs to be both installed and used. [ you're posting to the A5v7 forum, instead of A5v5 ]

      Hi Tom,

I think I only have one cylinder working today - I meant to state version 7 and version 7 runtime not v5. I have indeed searched for the answer and it appears your quote both need to be installed and used" is the common answer, however both applications are installed and used but the original option to create an installation for runtime is still not under utilities?

        Andy,

        Good morning...

        I had the same problem(s)

I think you need to run the A5 runtime .exe once, from before the development app can see it. I know it sounds a little goofy but, try it.

Start -> Run -> locate the A5RT program and run.

        Hope this helps.

Most things sound 'goofy' without an explanation.

At startup, A5 checks the windows registry for information about it's setup. If the header information is not found, then A5 creates the registry entries.

One of these entries is the location of the exe.

It could be argued that all of this should be done at installation. On the other hand, if it's done at A5 startup, it can self correct and can also keep the installation routine simpler.

                Bob,
Many thanks - the update download fixed the problem.
I can now create my runtime packages.
                Kind regards

Re: Runtime is driving me Mad!

Andy, I infer from your description that you experienced the Runtime "gotcha" problem.

The first step to fix this problem is to run the alpha5.exe in the Runtime folder. Clearly you have now done this. The second step is to recognize there is a problem with the A5 Runtime installer - it creates a shortcut on the Windows desktop that is identical to that created by the A5 developer's version installer. So after you install the Runtime and then run what you think is the developer's version from its desktop shortcut (which is probably what most of us do to run it), you are actually running the Runtime. So guess what - no InstallMaker option is on the menu options. "Gotcha", so to speak. :D

The solution is to go to the desktop shortcut and change the A5v7 Runtime folder name to "A5v7" and then run the developer's version. Problem fixed.

I vote that the good folk at Alpha Software fix this problem so there are no more "Gotcha"s.

Re: Runtime is driving me Mad!

Just curious, but, I sell my app online and found the install maker with Alpha is very limited and use Astrum Install Wizard. Inexpensive and full featured. Just thought I would drop a line and make the suggestion. Made my life a lot easier:)
