Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Still Using Alpha 4 Ver. 1 Dos-HELP

First I need to know if Windows XP supports Alpha 5 ver 1 for windows which I have, but never installed.

Next I need to transfer all Alpha 4 ver.1 DOS files into a new Alpha. Which version will be good for this? How can I copy the data from Alpha 4 and transfer it over to a newer version.

I think my hard drive is going and I don't want to lose all my work.

    Thanks,
    Betsy

Re: Still Using Alpha 4 Ver. 1 Dos-HELP

    Betsy,

Since no one else jumped in, I'll offer a few thoughts.

What you are saying is, to me, not all that clear. In one instance, you mention A4V1, then in another, you mention A5V1. When you state " First I need to know if Windows XP supports Alpha 5 ver 1 for windows which I have, but never installed.", are you saying you have Win XP that you've never installed, or are you saying that you have A5V1 which you have never installed?

If you are saying that you have never installed A5V1, you need to know that A5V1 is OLD. The current version is A5V8 (just released).

The data you are referencing (the .dbf files) can easily be copied to a (new) folder under whichever version of Alpha 4 or 5 you use. Memo fields (if you have any) should also transfer easily. I can't offer any thoughts on the forms, reports, etc. since I'm not at home to test any transferring on my development system.

Worst case is that after you copy the data and memo fields, you will have to recreate everything else. A lot of this will be driven by the complexity of you application and what it consists of.

If you want answer or help on the messageboard that is meaningfull, you should be as clear and detailed as possible. Otherwise, all you will get are guesses and suppositions.

      Dave,

I'm new at this, I'll try to be more specific.

I have a 386 Computer with Dos 6.22. I am now using Alpha 4 Ver.1 The only back up I'm using is Data Cartridges 2120XL QIC 80 format, which is not on the XP computer so this backup is no use to me.

I have another computer with XP and Alpha 5 for Windows which was never installed on any computer.

I would like to copy the data from Alpha 4 and put it into another Alpha Program that is compatible with XP.

Is there any way to copy the Alpha 4 info and put it onto the XP computer. I would be willing to purchase the newest version of Alpha.

        We're getting closer.

I don't think Windows XP will recognize the QIC backup system.

I have another computer with XP and Alpha 5 for Windows which was never installed on any computer. is still ambigious. You have a computer with Win XP on it. Does that second computer have any Alpha program on it, or do you have two boxes - one each with Windows XP and Alpha Five (some version) in them? I can't tell by what you are saying.

The latest version of Alpha Five (V8) is compatible with Win XP, as are at least of the three previous versions, V5, V6 & V7. V8 is also compatible with Vista, the latest version of Windows.

The Alpha 4 data that you want to copy is stored in .dbf files which can be read by any version of A5.

          Hi Dave,

Guess you figured out I am computer illiterate.

The computer with XP does not have any Alpha programs on it.

The .dbf files on the old 386 are too big to fit on a 3.5" diskette. Is there any way to transfer the data from the 386 to the Win XP computer if I install the newest version of Alpha.

          Thanks for your help.

Re: Still Using Alpha 4 Ver. 1 Dos-HELP

            Betsy,

Okay, now we have the computer, Operating System and Alpha straightened out. Let's get to the data.

There are a couple of ways to transfer the data files from the old computer to t he new one. As I said previously, the data files, in all versons of Alpha (whether the DOS-based Alpha Four or the Windows-based Alpha Five) are all stored with a .dbf extension, which simply means that all you have to do is copy the files from the older computer to the newer.

If your file(es) is/are too large to fit on a 3.5" diskette, you can compress them (commonly called 'zipping' them) assuming you have a compression program and you know how tio do it. There are many DOS-based compression programs available (Zip-It being just one). You can do a goggle search and find more. You can also copy to a CD, again assuming you have a CD burner on the older machine - you probably have a CD reader on the newer. You could also copy from one computer to the other across a network, assuming.....). The last option I can think of (I'm sure there are more) is to send the .dbf file as an attachment to an e-mail from one computer to the other even if that means sending the email to yourself.

Thanks Dave, I don't have a CD burner, but you gave me enough options to try.
