Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

So you could just use Alpha's email_send() function to send an email to the phone number you want. I believe Verizon works the same where you could just send an email to [email protected] and you would not need an account anywhere.

      Re: A way to Monitor the WAS?

      Sure thing Ray

      Below is a function I made where you can just pass the to, from, subject and body. It uses a different function from email_send() because I did not want to bring up any user interface at all. The function below talks directly to the smtp server and just sends the message. Totally transparent to the user. I call it when a certain condition is met that I want to email someone about.

      There are 3 variables defined inside the function that you will need to intialize before calling the function. They are gvsyssmtpserver, gvsyssmtpuser,and gvsyssmtppass. So this is the name and logon info of you smtp server. Most smtp servers have login info these days to prevent email relaying.

      examples (for my provider)

      smtp server: smtp.domainname.com
      user: [email protected]
      password: somepassword

      Code:
      FUNCTION SvcProgSendMail AS C (Mailto AS C, Mailfrom as C, Mailsubj AS C, Mailbody AS C )
      dim pm as P
      dim ps as P
      if (email_smtp_open(ps, gvsyssmtpserver, 25, gvsyssmtpuser, gvsyssmtppass)) then
          pm.to = Mailto
          pm.from = Mailfrom
          pm.subject = Mailsubj
          pm.message = Mailbody
      '    pm.attachments = <<%str
      '        C:\test.zip
      '        c:\dev\test2.zip
      '        %str%
       '   pm.html_message = "<HTML><B>This is the message in HTML</B></HTML>"
      SvcProgSendMail=email_smtp_send(pm, ps)
      end if
      email_smtp_close(ps)
      END FUNCTION
      Regards,

      Jeff

        Re: A way to Monitor the WAS?

        Different carriers may have different rules, Verizon has no Subject line, just the From and Msg.

        So a real simple script would be:

        msg = message
        email_send(technicianNo,"",msg)

        Where message and technicianNo are fields in a dialog.

        I use a variation of this, in simple form:

        msg = category + ":" + domain + ":" + message
        technicianNo = lookup("<ADB_Path>\settings",".t.",technicianNo)
        email_send(technicianNo,"",msg)

        See the attached dialog. It concatenates various fields from the dialog, gets the single technician cell number (me) from a lookup and sends the message. I have a Verizon phone, so the script is written to that. I suppose you would concatenate the cellphone number with the proper email address if you had different phones. [email protected], [email protected], etc.

            I use AlwaysUp by www.coretechnologies.com to keep the servers up in case of reboot. That progrm also reports to me every 9PM and provides stats. If the server hangs for xx minutes, or consumes 100% CPU, it reboots the Alpha WAS>
            Steve, how did you configure Alwaysup to start/preselect a certain database within Alpha Five version 8? Do you have an practical example or a screenshot of the startup parameters?

              Use Alpha's built in Create Shortcut feature to add a desktop short cut. Then select this shortcut as your program in AlwaysUp. I have not tried that, but it should work. Also, the owner of AlwaysUp is very responsive to support requests. If you can't get it to work, I will try some tests.

                  I have to wait for a new license to arrive to put it on a machine that has A5 (non WAS) on it. Should be later today.

                    It worked just fine. Here is what I have in various fields, your's would be different of course. This is for runtime, but would work the same for professional version:

                    Program: C:\Program Files\A5V7 Runtime\alpha5.exe

                    Arguments: e:\public\databases\atswin\Ats5.Adb -INCLUDE=e:\public\databases\atswin\Ats5.startup

                    Start In: e:\public\databases\atswin
