Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New to A5V7

    Hi everyone,

I am new to A5V7 and A5 in general. I have no experience with DB development and am hoping that A5V7 can be used by a rookie like me. Has anyone in the forums had a similar experience? I would appreciate feedback on what to expect when using this app - ease and difficulties.

Also, is A5V8 that much better than V7? Will it be easier for me to learn if I upgrade? Is V8 more intuitive/user friendly? Let me know.

    Thanks,

    Steve

Welcome to Alpha Five. If you just acquired version 7, you may be eligible for a free or low-cost upgrade to version 8. Check with Alpha's customer service if you're interested.

I doubt you'll get much useful information from your question --- it's pretty general. If you have specific questions, use the Search feature first here on the board, and if you don't find what you want feel free to ask.

      Re: New to A5V7

Welcome. I echo what Steve said about the general nature of your question.

That said, I would spend some time looking at the AlphaSports Example and time looking at the tutorial section of the help file. There is a TON of information in the help file and on this message board. You just have to spend some time getting familiar with it.

I would upgrade to Ver 8 if you can. It is not largely different on the surface from ver 7 but there are oodles of improvements that make ver 8 very worthwhile to upgrade.

      Regards,

      Jeff

        Steve, Jeff:

I think I'll wait to upgrade but will use the help files in V7 and the message board to learn the app.

        Thanks for the replys.

          Hey Steve!

I was wondering if you'd done any research re purchasing either of the instructional manual sets available? Both the Pace and Liberty offerings are a bit pricey. I wouldn't mind buying one or the other but would prefer not to have buy both -- waste of money AND TIME.

I guess I'm old fashioned, but I do enjoy a paper book that I can curl up with ...don't enjoy "online" instruction/reading for the longterm.

Would love to hear anyone's thoughts/opinions on the "Pace vs. Liberty" question.

            Jim

I own both of the manuals. But, I would suggest really spending time looking at the Alpha Sports Demo program. There is a TON of Alpha's power exposed in that example. Unfortunately, Alpha has taken down off of their site temporarily (while it is updated and reviewed since the release of Ver 8) lots a very good learning info. There is a lot of good learning info in the help file too if you go to the tutorial section.

I know it is sometimes easier to read the stuff from print, if you want to get a set of the books I found the Pace books a little more complete.

            Regards,

            Jeff

              Jim,

I found the Pace manuals online but where can I find the Liberty manual? I didn't see it on AF's website. In the mean time I'm using the Alpha Sports Demo as Jeff suggested.

Jim, thanks for suggesting the books.
