Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Security Framework questions

    (1)

Is there any way to allow access to a file on a V8 Application Server with Security Framework turned on, where the file has NOT been published from Alpha Five and in fact the project does not yet exist? Situation is where a brand new folder is created under A5Webroot, and a file named welcome.htm will be placed in that new folder - but the project has not been created yet, therefore no security files have been published to this new project location.

I guess I am asking if there is any global override per server by filename, or file extension. Per project you can do this, but not per server as far as I can tell.

If not, then is it possible to create "stock" web_security files that give welcome.htm an Always Allow setting, and copy (not publish) those files along with my welcome.htm file to the new project location, thereby allowing access to welcome.htm, even though the project has not been created or published.

    (2)

Given that Security Framework is toggled on or off at the server level, is there any way to toggle SF on or of by project, or by subfolder. So c:\A5Webroot\Site1 will have SF on, and c:\A5Webroot\Site2 will have SF off?

    (3)

Is there any inheritance for security? I have found situations where if a file has permissions set in one directory, a file with the same name, in a subfolder will have the same permissions. For example, if c:\W5Webroot\myfile.a5w is set to Always Allow, then c:\A5Webroot\newfolder\myfile.a5w is automatically rendered Always Allow. Its quite possible to create this situation in a web project, but the Web Security / Page Security Assignment does not seem to be able to handle this (because it does not acknowledge subfolders off the project folder).

    Re: Security Framework questions

Security by folder is being investigated, but is not currently part of the security. You can set security by file extension.

The security checks page name and extension, not the folder name. Since the page permissions are saved in a text file as part of property saved as a string, you could edit the files and add any page names you want. However, manual editing is at your own risk.

The built in security does not and can not accomodate all possible configurations.

Just to clarify, this statement does not mean that two different projects, on the same server, would share security settings. For example, if you have a page myaccount.a5w in both site1 and site2, and both of those were different projects, and myaccount.a5w required login, then

permissions for c:\a5webroot\site1\myaccount.a5w would not be carried over to c:\a5webroot\site2\myaccount.a5w. That is, if you logged in to Site1, and that granted you permission to site1/myaccount.a5w, that does not mean a user can have access to site2/myaccount.a5w without also properly logging into site2.

I did test this -- Jerry, correct yes?
