Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Using Session Vars in Grid Components

    Hello all...

    I am a bit confused about the way grid components are working for me.

    I am using A5V8, in conjunction with the new Web Security Framework. Each user is redirected to the same page after logging in, and on that page a few session variables are declared, including the following:

    session.userid = get_user_id()

    get_user_id() is a function I designed, and it returns the user's login id (I'm not having problems on that). When I test the variable on another page, it works just fine, displaying it nicely in html.

    The problem is, I want to use the session variable in a query for a grid component. So, in the Query section of the component, I put:

    Userid = session.userid

    (where userid is the field in the table). It doesn't work. In fact, even if I declare a local variable on the page that contains the grid component, it still doesn't work. Also, I've noticed that it doesn't show up in the expression builder under session variables.

    Why is this, and how do I get this to work? Is there a special place I need to declare the session variables in order for them to show up?

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    Re: Using Session Vars in Grid Components

    That's not how it works on grid componants. You can't filter on directly on session values in the query filter - you have to take one more step.

    Taking your example, click Define Arguments on your grid.
    Insert a new argument named arguserid (I'd make it arg_userid, but there is or was a bug in arguments that won't allow underscore. You also don't want it to be just userid because that may conflict with the new security framework field with the same name. In fact, change your session.userid to something else, I'll call it sessio.theuserid from here).

    Anyway. define your argument as Get value from variable. Under Variable, scope it as a session variable, and name it theuserid (note, name does not include 'session.').

    Now filter your grid on userid = arguserid

      Thanks, Steve. Is the variable that I define in the arguments screen supposed to show up in the session variables section of the expression screen?

      It doesn't do that for me. Also, even when the argument is populated with a preview value, it still doesn't show a preview, still shows an error ("Error 4 - Filter expression has error: Familyuserid = arguserid", where Familyuserid is the field in the table) Also, just tested it on the web, still giving the error.

      Perhaps there is an update to Alpha that I haven't yet installed? It says I'm using version 8, build 1257, system addins build 3055.

        Sorry, poor instructions; I'm still getting used to this too. A sample filter would be:

        Client_ID=alltrim(:aulink)

        where the argument is prefixed with the ":".

        There are more recent patches than the one you have.

          Re: Using Session Vars in Grid Components

          I have just now started to work with the arguments and have hit a snag. See the attached jpg for how I have the argument setup. Here are the parameters for the page that shows the session variable (reflastname) and the grid should be filtering on this session variable.

          refnum=3522
          reffirstname=Philip
          reflastname=Rolf
          [email protected]
          fullname=Philip Rolf
          FlagIsLoggedIn=True
          __protected__FlagIsLoggedIn=True
          SessionID=309258670b5b4f3692af753bba7fe93f
          session_folder=C:\A5Webroot\session_folders\309258670b5b4f3692af753bba7fe93f\
          session_url=/session_folders/309258670b5b4f3692af753bba7fe93f/
          timestamp=03/13/2007 07:04:50 82 am
          __protected__SecurityLevel=0
          My filter in the grid is
          Code:
          alltrim(Lastname)=alltrim(:aureflastname)
          However, when I run the page it comes back with No Records In Query. When I define the filter it shows that at least one of the records is true. See second jpg.

          Where am I going wrong?

          Thanks

            As I said below. the variable in the Define Arguments page should not be preceded with the word "session.". Just put in the variable name and scope it as a session var from the pulldown.

              Steve,

              Once again, you are correct, removing the "session" from the variable did it. The filtering is now working....

              Thanks
