Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Trying to update structure of table

    Hi

Whenever I try to change the structure of my tables, (ie add a new field, change the type of field from say memo to Rich Text etc), it starts to save the changes but then stops at record no. 580, freezes and then I have to ctrl alt del to get out. It has done this for the past couple of years and I have worked around it, but now could really do with it being sorted out. Any ideas?

    Thanks for any help

Sounds like you have some garbage data in a record. If you don't find it by visual examination, copy records 1 to 575 to another table, try to restructure that table. If that works, copy records 576 to 585 to another table, try to restructure. If that doesn't work, copy records 575-580 to another table, etc.

Eventually you should be able to find the offending records and fix or delete it.

GArbage data might not be obvious. It could be ascii codes outside the printable/visible range. Error message is no help to me because I have no experience with it.

Did you try the suggested steps? At what point did you encounter the error?

That's not what I suggested. If the data is not sensitive (social security numbers, phone numbers, etc) zip it up and attach it here. Someone will take a look.

Re: Trying to update structure of table

ok, what i have done is:

copy the entire table to a 'test' table
                deleted records 600-3354 (last record)
tried to amend structure, same problem (stops at record 580 but strangely still says 'of 3354' ???? though they ahd been deleted)
                deleted records 579 - 599
tried to amend structure, same problem, stops at 580 of 3354 - but there is now only 579 records.???

The data is quite sensitive so I would rather not post it. My abilities are limited so I can only do what I know...!

                Does this new info help?

Now copy table, delete 590-3354, pack, amend.

Most likely it will fail. The 580 you saw in the status bar was probably the last "group of 10" that the restructure reported in the progress indicator. If the restructure fails, you know the problem record is between 586 and 589 so the visual search for garbage can be limited to those four records. You could keep copying and deleting

                        586-3354,pack,amend - if that works
                        587-3354,pack,amend - if that works
                        588-3354,pack,amend - if that works
                        589-3354,pack,amend

until you encounter the bad record.

Depending on your data you may be able to visually note the field values, delete the bad record, and create a new record with the noted values.
                        There can be only one.

                          ok, not what i expected:

could not id which particular record so:

                          deleted 584-600, packed
try to amend and it stopped at 590 (stopped at 580 before) and showed 17% (same percent as before)

                          deleted records 1-50, packed
try to amend and it stopped at record 540 this time and now showed 16%

                          any ideas?????? aaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggnhhhhhhhhhhh

                          thanks!

Re: Trying to update structure of table

Let's try a different approach. Copy all records to a new table, delete all records, pack. Design an append operation and append all records to the new table. The append should stop at the last "good" record. Examine the next record in the original table. It should be the problem record.
                            There can be only one.
