Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Two Instances of Startup Form

I've searched and not found an answer.

I've attached the database. The startup form is "a_home." This form will open two instances - you can see the title bar twice as it loads VERY slowly, then you'll only see one. I believe I was trying to edit the form when I received the error message that there are 2 instances open.

When the a_home form opens, there are many seconds that go by until you can use the form. It will show part of the form on the left then it finally shows the rest, but I still have to wait before I can do anything. I click to go the control panel or any other place I want to go, but everything is locked and I'm not able to do a thing until the program finishes whatever it's doing. It will not even show the flyover effects, like it is still loading and I must wait, and there is no hourglass. It never took long to load before.

Trouble is, it's not consistent. It will load correctly and quickly three times or so then the next time it is hosed.

If I make the startup form something else, it opens correctly.

Is my form just corrupt? This problem started after I edited the a_home form. Will I have to delete the form and start from scratch or is there a way to save this form? I did try rebuilding all the indexes. I also reinstalled A5 v6 Build 1600, with system addins: Build 2057. I also reinstalled the a5v6_fullpatch.exe, which I believe containes all the other patches I have (2040, 2041, 2046, 2051, 2057 and no_BarUSPSFont.exe).

Additionally, I was editing the form a_jobsGRAND and I'd make a change, like bringing a type-in field to the front, and I'd save the form and reopen it and all the fields I'd just brought to the front (in the area beginning with "NCR # of Parts") were now behind the colored square After saving the form, the script for the button"Invoices" under the Customer section now opens a browse instead of a form. The script changed all by itself. Other scripts were confused also and I had to edit them to put them back to where they were.

    Thank You in advance.

Re: Two Instances of Startup Form

Trr performing a database compact. Before I did this the Jobs Showing Reorders Set.SEM file was 8531 kb. After compacting 759 kb. The a_tir_start.DDM before - 2736 kb, after 327 kb.

Compacting should remove all the discarded changes to yor database and greatly speed loading.

I always recommend using much shorter names for tables and fields and if "words" in table names must be used, separate them with an underscore rather than a space.
    There can be only one.

Thanks for the tip on packing - that cut the size in half.

It didn't fix the problem though.

      Thanks,
      Shirley

I was able to speed up the loading of the startup form by changing all text and button labels to one font. The use of several versions of Arial (Narrrow, Black, @Arial Unicode) seems to bog the application down.
