Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Network Running very slow

About 2 years ago, using V5, we were having a very long lag on a specific form.

It turned out the problem was with the use of parentform.refresh_layout(). I had a conditional object with about 22 conditions, and the function was refreshing each condition.

I had it in there to refresh an embedded browse, as I was using a child form (as a dialog) to enter and edit child records.

IT helped me trace the problem. When they came back from the dialog, and hit that function in the script, the traffic jumped off the screen, completely off his trace buffer (which was large)

I changed how I was doing things, by creating the record silently in the form, (thus the form's embedded browse already was uptodate,) and I didn't need to use parentform.refresh_layout() - and the speed came back to normal.

I use NOD32 on w2k and XP machines with A5. Used to use Norton 3 or 4 years ago and had too many problems. More to the point, a client also uses NOD32 on a win 2003 server network with about 20 workstations with a mix of w2k and XP. The client has been using NOD32 for over 3 years--no problems with A5 and seems to be an excellent option all around. Small footprint and fast scanning and daily automatic updates.

Thanks for all the input to this question. I was able to run my notebook on the problem network today and it ran fine. I'm using Norton 2005.

They will be upgrading one of the problem computers within a week to Norton 2007. We will see if there is a speed improvement.

        I'll let you know.

I can also recommend Nod32 for anti virus. You hardly know it is running and uses a relatively small amount of resources. I use zone alarm for a laptop firewall which is ok but does suffer from the odd glitch and hardware firewall for home and work networks. I do have Norton 2005 set-up on the kids computers as I like the parental block feature.

              Re: Network Running very slow

I found a number of things.

First, the real problem computer is running a celeron 1.7 GHz processor with 512 meg of ram and had Norton 2006 Anti-virus. This has been upgraded to Norton 2007 Anti-virus and there has been a speed improvement.

My notebook running Norton 2005 anti-virus and seems to run "OK".

Other computers on the system with Norton 2007 seem to be running "OK".

We're still running A5V5 apps and they are faster than A5V8 apps.

The office person is still doing trials on the new app so I should know better in a few days.
