Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Runtime will not install and run app - help?

    Hi all.

I have an app with runtime that I install periodically on different computers in house(large app). I can put the workstation installation on a disk, copy it to the c drive, run it and it completely installs. You can then click the startup icon for the app and the app autoexec set the whole thing up and runs the shadow from the server.

Everything has worked great til 3 days ago. I installed the wssetup. It ran, put proper insertions to registry, copied all files needed. On clicking the starting icon, a5v7 started, but the app did not. On trying to manually start the app from av57RT, the startup form did not open. Then when starting the main menu form that checks for 2 files existence, it could not find the first file on disk( it is there ).

I manually copied the whole directory off another winXP computer with the same results.

I don't believe the app or a5v7 is at fault. I got rid of a program called Bigfix( This is an EMachine, 1 Year old with a new hard drive), stopped all running programs, and made sure I had a clean boot. I have extensively searched the permissions, User is unlimited administrator.

    Any Ideas??

Re: Runtime will not install and run app - help?

    Since:

I uninstalled the whole thing(including registry entries).
    Started from scratch.
installed a5v7RT in the default directory
    did the patch to newest
    installed a5v7rt in ups55
    did the patch
copied the 2 searched files to their proper locations
    ran a5v7rt
tried to make a shadow on disk ***option to shadow is not there
copied all shadow copies from another xp machine

    STILL does the same thing!

The computer in question had a hard drive failure and Emachines warrantied a new hard drive that was already set up with winXP.

An ideas would be a help.

Re: Runtime will not install and run app - help?

I created an Install Package from my laptop (running XP) onto a flash stick. I moved the stick to a desktop machine running ME, ran the exe file. I don't recall a desktop icon, but I was able to start the runtime.

I entered the license number and then it required an activation key which was successfuly retrieved.

I tried to install the package on my office computer (running XP). It created a desktop icon, which maps to a folder containing the data files. However, there is no executable program.

        Any ideas?

1 Why wold you have to have an activation key for a runtime? Something wrong here.

2 what installer did you use?

3 Icons have to be created and installed?

4 Do you have no Alpha5.exe? or someother exe? Sounds like something on the installer or other files did not make iit over.

          5 More information is needed.

There was an icon in the download file created when I ran the Install Package exe file on the ME unit. I clicked it and the Alpha 5 v.7 program started. It asked for a license number (I got this from my laptop) and then said an Activation code was required: I could obtain this by internet, phone or ??. I clicked internet; in a couple of seconds, it said "Thank you for activating."

The program continued (very slowly) and I was able to open my database.

When I ran the Install Package on my office workstation, there was no icon in the resulting file.

2 what installer did you use?
I used the native installer on both computers. The ME worked; the XP didn't

3 Icons have to be created and installed?
I don't understand this in light of the fact that I didn't do this on the ME computer. Also, I'm not sure how to do this. Isn't this what the Install Package is supposed to do?

4 Do you have no Alpha5.exe? or someother exe? Sounds like something on the installer or other files did not make iit over.
There is no Alpha5.exe on any of the computers where I ran the Install Package.

            Thanks.

No, I was not. I never did much with db11. Must be someone else.

I don't use the built in installer, so am not sre what it does. Maybe someone who uses it can jump in.

I would re do all my steps and try to figure where an error could have happened. Sometimes it just happens. See if it occurs another time?
