Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Bubble Help is hit and miss

I started updating the bubble help on fields in my app. Some work fine, others show for a second and disapear and some wom't show at all.

Anyone using customer help in V8 and does it work any better?

Well, let me clarify this even more. This problem is directly related to the same problem as the font issue is on buttons. The bubble help works fine on fields but not on buttons. The button issue has been a problem for some time now. You still have trouble changing the font on abutton after you save it for the first time. In order to do it you have to open propertirs and change something in the "Flyover Effects" area and then it will let you change the font. You have to do this every time. This button problem I beleive is the same problem I'm having with the bubble help. It works great except on buttons.

Fred, on my current application (A5V8) the following is consistently working and as expected.

      1) Font change on button and bubble help for button, including remaining persistent until mouse is moved

      2) Font change on fields and bubble help for fields, including remaining persistent until mouse is moved.

I know one thing I struggeld with as to fly over effects was to remember to use the Apply button when changing the options. When I used just the OK button it does not save the settings.

Not on mine and not on a developer friend in Atlanta. We talked on the phone this moring and he tried it with the same results. The bubbke help works great on fields but not on buttons. It flashes the help buble for a second and then gone. It also won't show when you move to it a second time. I'm waiting on another developer friend to test it on his app. The button font will change only after modifing the flyover effect portion even if you do click the apply button. When more than one of us is having the same problem it sure must be a bug.

          Fred,

I have never liked using bubble help, so I came up with a 'solution' that works for me. I use RTF fields with the field default set as hidden. When you mouseover the object (any object on the form) I have the RTF field display and when you mouseoff, the RTF field hides.

This works 100% of the time and there are added benefits; you can control the size of the RTF field, the font face, font color (you can mix colors within the RTF field), size and border.

Try this in place of the bubble help and you'll never go back to bubble help.

strange, to say the least. perhaps Alpha can explain how it works on some systems but not others or perhaps there is a setting to be changed that is unknown.

WOW Dudes! We figured it out. I really like what Dave J came up with.

Heres the scoop! All of us with the problem are modifing a form origanlly built in Alpha5V5. We ever we create the button or form in V8 it works great. I guess you really cant just convert an application built in V5 into V8 unless its a simple form.
