Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    combobox selected index

    How can I determine the index of the selected item in a combobox ? I want to be able to read/modify the combobox.choice.list[index].text property

    Bruce,

    I see no one else has ventured forth with a suggestion for you.

    How are you populating the list displayed in the combo box?

    Is the combo box control bound to a table field, or to a variable?

      The combo box is bound to a table field
      I am populating it with xbasic filling the combobox.choice.list array text and value

        Re: combobox selected index

        Sorry. I have little personal experience working with this kind of control when its bound to a live table field. Have you tried scanning the array to locate the selected element? This would give you the index, wouldn't it?

          Re: combobox selected index

          That was my first thought, but the normal array.find() method does not work with the combobox array, there is a note in the help files that the combobox array is not a "normal" array and some array methods will not work.

          comboboxname.choice.list.size() does work
          comboboxname.choice.list.find("002","value") does not work
          get an error message 'comboboxname not found'

            Re: combobox selected index

            You said you populated the control using xbasic. I assumed you created a crlf delimited list or array first, and then populated the control from there. I was suggesting that (possibly) the scan should be against the original delimited list or array, not against the list that's already in the control, so to speak.

              Re: combobox selected index

              Thats what I have done, but I have several comboboxes so I end up with a lot of extra arrays, and whenever I modify the combo box I have to modify the array to keep them in synch, and when I open the drag/drop list it shows each array element as a separate variable so I have a rather long list of variables. I was just hoping for a better way to do it.

              In twenty years of programing, this is the first time I have ever worked with a combobox that does not have a selected index property.

                Sounds like something that could be posted to the Features Wishlist forum (if you haven't done so already).

                  Hi All!!

                  Was a solution found for this? I have the same problem, seems like there's no way to get the selected value from a combo box. That's ridiculous!!! What/How are we supposed to do?

                  Please help.

                    Re: combobox selected index

                    While you can't directly get the selected index in V8 (I havn't looked at V9 yet) you can set a value for each entry and use that as an index
                    either entering as user defined:
                    Entry 1|1
                    Entry 2|2

                    or using xbasic
                    i = 0
                    while .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
                    i = i + 1
                    pObj.choice.list[i].text = trim(tbl.name)
                    pObj.choice.list[i].value = i
                    tbl.fetch_next()

                    I place this code in a function, pObj is a pointer to the combo box

                    then in either case to get the "index" use: idx = formname:comboboxname.value
                    or in the combobox change event idx = this.value

                    One other thing, the value will be the same type as the combobox
                    field if you display a character the value will be a character and if the field is a Number the value will be a number

                    hope this helps
