Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Check box in an embedded browse

I have a form with an embedded browse. The browse contains a column that references a memo field. When I select a check box on the properties menu the browse column properly converts to check boxes. When I click on the check box a separate window for the memo field opens up as expected. My puzzle is that some of the check boxes show a check mark while most do not. Where there is a check there is data in the memo field. But there are also records that contain data in the memo field but the box is not checked. I cannot figure out how to enter or remove the checks.

Can someone steer me to an explanation as to how the check box can be used. I cannot find anything in the help files or in the forum.

Thanks in advance from a novice,

    John

I think you're misusing the checkbox option. I believe it's intended for logical fields only. At least this is what the help file indicates. Check the help file topic: Column Properties.

      Thanks Tom.

I missed the statement 'for logical fields only'. Now I have to figure out an alternative way to accomplish my goal of displaying a flag on the browse to indicate that the memo field contains content and then providing a button or link in the browse to the memo field.

I truly appreciate the support you and the other experts provide to this forum. Without such help I am afraid I wouldn't be able to take my Alpha efforts very far.

Most would simply include the memo field as a column in the browse. If there's text, it will be visible... at least in part, depending upon column width.

If you don't want to do that then consider creating a form level calc field which is set to true if the memo field contains text, and set false if it does not. Then put the calc field in the embedded browse layout, and choose the display as check box option.

          John,
Return the field to a standard type in field. Then...
          1. Select the column in the Browse in Design Mode.
          2. Right mouse click and select 'Properties'.
          3. Choose the tab 'Other'.
          4. In the 'Color' area, check the 'Enable color equation' check box and enter the Color Equation Genie by pressing the XY button at the end of the equation field.
          5. I like to change the background color to 'RED'. Add the following to the accompanying equation: isnotblank("yourmemofieldname"), or enter the expression builder and use the Genie there to create your conditional expression.

Now when a memo exists, the record field background will be red. If it is empty, the default color. I think this is something like what you were looking for.

To expand on Tom's idea of building a logical field showing a checkbox.

You could build a simple form to display your memo field and include a button to close the form.

Then in design mode of form with the embedded browse,
right click on the embedded browse,
            select events, OnrowDblClick,
            use action scripting, to select
Category Form/Browse Action Zoom to Record
Specify Form now and select the form you just built.

Now when you double click on a check row, you can see the memo information.

PMJI, and so late at that, but how does one test a memo field? I'm coloring tabs, and the others are set
              if Cfield+Cfield=chr(Nfield)...=""
but I can't figure how to tell if a memo field is empty.

Stranger and stranger. I added a new character field (Note) calculated to be the memo field.

                if Note.text = "" then

works! I don't get how a character field can be calculated from a memo, but I'm keeping it.

Re: Check box in an embedded browse

There should be no difference between

                  if Note.text = "" then

                  and

                  if Memofieldobjectname.text = "" then

The .text returns the displayed value of the memo field object on the form in character format.
                  There can be only one.

Re: Check box in an embedded browse

Thanks, Stan. I'm keeping the extra field for consistency with the other tabs (which have many items and do need adding), but I'll know better next time. Our memo fields are minimal since I have no idea how to translate them to other applications.
