Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Application Design Question

I currently have 2 Alpha5V8 applications running for a client. Recently the client updated the network from a simple peer to peer WIN XP network to a full WIN Server 2003 network. All Alpha5 apps were migrated to the server today without any problems(so far);) .

During the network cutover it was discovered that an old bastardized Access database would not migrate. The customer has requested me to convert it to Alpha5V8 and I have done some preliminary work.

I discovered that the data in the access database shares(duplicates) some of the data already in the existing A5V8 databases. I want to be a good designer because "It is recommended that when you develop your application, you place all of the files that belong to that application in a single folder. Then you can be sure that as long as you install all of the files from this folder on your users machines, you will have included all of the necessary application files."

I am looking for suggestions on how to share this common info with the new application.

Should I copy the database file from one folder to the other once a day? (if know one is using the destination database)

    Should I break the rule?

    Re: Application Design Question

Maybe I don't quite understand, but if you're converting the Access stuff to A5, then there shouldn't be a problem. (Re)design it all so that it's all in Alpha and all in the same folder. I've had customers who tried shortcutting things before, similar to this, and within a couple years we just end up doing it all in A5, in the same folder.

      Re: Application Design Question

      Steve,
Thanks for the quick reply. I was planning on converting the Access application to A5V8. As the client already has 2 other A5V8 apps running now, I was just trying to get an idea on how to proceed.

Should all 3 of the applications files be in the same folder? This will make the sharing of similar data simpler, I was just thinking of the "housekeeping" tasks of backup and restore on 3 apps in the same folder.

      Thank You

        Re: Application Design Question

If the "applications" share some data, then it does indeed make sense to keep 'em all in one folder.

Remember, that single folder can contain all your tables and sets, but within that folder, you can create multiple databases. You can have DataBase1.adb with it's own control panel, attached tables & sets, etc. You can also have Database2.adb with its own attached tables & sets etc. And any one table or set can be attached to as many databases as need be.

From what you've said so far, I think this would work, and save you bunches of trouble & maintenance down the line.

Editing thought: You've really asked a desktop-application question here, but posted it in the web app server section of the forum. In the future, you might want to post questions like this in the appropriate section. Everything we've discussed here so far has little to do with web app development.

          Re: Application Design Question

          Steve,
Sorry about the location for this post. I was working late last nite and my brain probably wasn't all there.

I will put all of the applications in the same same folder.

Thank you again for your assistance.

Just noticed: Prescott! Where Barry Goldwater made so many announcements from the courthouse steps, and I have a friend on Butterfly Drive! Love it there.

Seen that too! I helped manage the Budweiser Clydesdales that day. I'll never forget that....
