Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Alpha Four V8 Printing in Vista

    Winagent does not seem to set up printers. Is there an update for winagent? Will there be an update for winagent? I am not having trouble running the program, just printing.

    Wow...

    I'm surprised that A4v8 works in Vista. I'm not sure I'd advise it..

    And there will not be updates for A4 to work in Vista. (At least from what I've been told..)

      Al, Thank for the reply.
      I am not having any problems and am not looking for an upgrade For Alpha Four, just Winagent. It doesn't seem to know where to look for printers.

        Re: Alpha Four V8 Printing in Vista

        Paul, If you do not require Typeset Mode printing you do not need winagent. I am not sure if it works in Vista or your version of Vista. You will have to check but it works in XP Pro.

        I am also assuming you have a USB printer so that Alpha can not print to it directly since it looks for an LPT port natively without winagent.

        First, Share you printer.
        Then use this command in a command prompt box: (not sure of support in Vista, you will have to check)
        Code:
         NET USE [devicename | *] [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
               [/USER:[domainname\]username]
               [/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
               [/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
               [/SMARTCARD]
               [/SAVECRED]
               [[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]
        [SIZE=1][SIZE=2]NET USE {devicename | *} [password[/SIZE] [/SIZE][SIZE=2]| *] /HOME[/SIZE]
        NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]
        devicename would equal LPT1:, LPT2:, etc
        Computername = would equal your computer name
        sharename = the name you called the printer when you shared it
        If you are not on a network and at home you should not have to worry about /user and passwords
        volume = not required
        And you will want to use the /PERSISTENT:YES so that you do not have to map via this method everytime you reboot.

        so your command should look something like this:

        NET USE LPT1: \\cname\sname /persistent:yes {enter key}

        note: and if you use this method there is no need to run winagent so you can start Alpha directly with A4v8.exe instead of A4.exe which starts winagent then alpha.

        It should respond with command completed sucessfully.
        To check the printer mapped correctly type in the command prompt box:

        NET USE {enter key}

        and you should see LPT1 listed with status if connected or not.

          Thanks Dave,
          I have since run the program on my other computer running the same version of Vista, (Ultimate), and it runs fine. I have to make some adjustments with fonts. I'm not sure why two different computers running the same version of Vista and the exact program file should act differently. Go figure.
          Since I only need to run this one program until the end of the year, I'll run it on the computer that works, dah.
          Thanks again

            This may solve a problem I'm having getting A4v8 to print to XP. But what is the following filename and where is it?

            NET USE [devicename | *]
            [\\computername\sharename[\volume] [password | *]]
            [/USER:[domainname\]username]
            [/USER:[dotted domain name\]username]
            [/USER:[username@dotted domain name]
            [/SMARTCARD]
            [/SAVECRED]
            [[/DELETE] | [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]]
            NET USE {devicename | *} [password | *] /HOME
            NET USE [/PERSISTENT:{YES | NO}]

              I've been looking over the cmd info, and I can't seem to get my printer to work. I have Alpha4v2 on windows xp. Is there more expressions for cmd?

                Re: Alpha Four V8 Printing in Vista

                Jon, A4v2 is not supported on WindowsXP let alone Vista(since that is the topic subject), it will corrupt your data. There are numerous posts on XP and corruption if you search the forums. You need to upgrade to A4v8 which is XP compatible.
