Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    TWAIN DIB's and global memory

    Hi,

    I'm testing some TWAIN code (EZTwain Pro). I can scan single and multiple scans direct to TIF files but is has an enormous advantage if I could scan into DIB's - Device Independent Bitmaps. In that way you could scan multiple pages in memory in an array of DIBs. The TWAIN library has also a great and powerful DIB function collection.

    But unfortunately everything that stores or handle a DIB let A5v5 crash and burn with Unhandled Exceptions. Never seen these so much as the last few days, :(

    It has something to do with global memory and the DIB handle, Xbasic doesn't like them.

    (Next explanation is coming from the manual)
    A DIB consists of a header giving height, width, bits per pixel, resolution, and so forth, followed by a color table if needed, followed by the pixels of the image. Windows stores DIBs in global memory blocks and work with the handles of these blocks. Problem is that these are not pointers.
    To access the information in a DIB you must either lock the DIB handle to obtain a pointer.

    e.g. The next code causes a Unhandled Exception Error.

    Code:
    [LEFT]'Some new types[/LEFT]
    declarestruct hdib L1hdib
    declarestruct hwnd L1hwnd

    [LEFT]'DLL functions
    declare Eztwain3 TWAIN_Acquire (hdib)(hwnd)
    declare Eztwain3 DIB_WriteToFilename L(hdib)C
    declare Eztwain3 DIB_Free L(hdib)[/LEFT]

    [LEFT]dim hd as {hdib}
    hd = TWAIN_Acquire(0)
    if hd <> 0 then
    DIB_WriteToFilename(hd, "my_scan.tif")
    end if
    DIB_Free(hd)[/LEFT]
    hd = 0
    I know that support has stopped on version 5 but who knows a Wizard of OZ comes with a solution.

    Such as:
    Know some Xbasic code how to get a DIB (Device Independent Bitmap - BMP) into a DDB (Device Dependent Bitmap) or DC. The DC - Device Context is the draw region in a USER CONTROL.

    Know some code how to use Blobs in conjunction with Bitmaps, DIBs and DDBs. I didn't found the solution in the help files so far.

    It is odd that there are lots of file and blob functions but none helped me to get a picture into a Device Context of the USER CONTROL such as the Clock Example. Of course I can use the picture object but then I have to scan everything into separate file of the wrong format (bmp/jpg) and I need tif files.

    I read the Dr Wayne papers but so far I had not the magic click in my head.

    Re: TWAIN DIB's and global memory

    I modified the code bit and it doesn't crash anymore but it get an -3 value. It means that the image is invalid (null or invalid DIB handle)

    Code:
    'Date Created: 29-Apr-2007 09:54:45 PM
    'Last Updated: 30-Apr-2007 01:44:49 AM
    'Created By  : Marcel Kollenaar
    'Updated By  : Marcel Kollenaar

    'Some new types
    declarestruct hdib L1value
    declarestruct hwnd L1value

    'DLL functions
    declare Eztwain3 TWAIN_Acquire (hdib)(hwnd)
    declare Eztwain3 DIB_WriteToFilename L(hdib)C
    declare Eztwain3 DIB_Free L(hdib)

    dim hd as {hdib}
    dim result as N

    hd = TWAIN_Acquire(0)
    if hd.value <> 0 then
     ui_beep(UI_SYSTEM_BEEP)
     result = DIB_WriteToFilename(hd.value, "C:\Documents and Settings\marcel\Mijn documenten\my_scan.tif")
     ui_msg_box("",str(result))
    end if
    DIB_Free(hd)
    delete hd

      Re: TWAIN DIB's and global memory

      From the DOSADI forum:

      If you want to get at the whole image as a chunk of memory, then you need to use the Win32 API. GlobalLock(hdib) will return a pointer to the first byte of the image in memory. You should call GlobalUnlock(hdib) when you are done using the pointer. The image in memory is formatted as a DIB header, immediately followed by the pixels in standard DIB format.

      Ok, I'll do some tests...

        Nope, GetLastError is returning 6. Illegal handle.

            Marcel,

            I figured you would eventually work it out!...you seem to have an enormous amount of persistance when faced with a puzzle. I also wanted to let you know that you really have not been just talking to yourself... :) I've been listening all along. But what you are doing is a bit advanced for me and so had literally nothing to contribute (sorry to say :( ).

              Re: TWAIN DIB's and global memory

              Hi Mike,

              Thanks for listening and the positive words. This type of coding is always let's just say Baroque and takes a lot of time with try and error to get it working right. These are not my words but Aarons. I just second that.

              And the solution was ehhhh, in the end simple. I posted it at Dosadi, Spike McLarty helped me really a lot.

              It was the handling of the declarestruct and use of it in the functions. Up to next hurdle :) .

                Re: TWAIN DIB's and global memory

                Marcel, could you please update this thread as you progress with the easytwain interface. Your experience will definitely be a help to those contemplating moving in that direction. Also, details about what your are able accomplish in Alpha would make good reading as we all like "good endings" :D

                In some ways threads are like teasers and the ones that deliver solutions i.e. feedback that moves us forward are the best.

                  Feedback, that's why I put this threads here in the hope somebody could help me. I can't take the next hurdle because I ran out of time and what is more importand a short of knowledge about the subject. So I drop it. There will be a moment when the pieces will come together.

                  So, for the time being there will be no updates on this subject.
