Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Grid Component (web dev) - detail view in pop up (new window)

    Hi

Can anyone advise me on how to enable the "detail view" in a Grid Component to present itself in a new window rather than stay in its existing window.

I was hoping that this would be an option in the Grid Component controls, but maybe I am missing something here

    Thank You

Its right there, in the Link Properties for the DetailView link field. Select New Window for the Target Frame or Window.

      Hi Steve

This might sound dumb, but I don't see any property under the control as suggested, or do you mean I should edit the field in the xbasic code

      please see attached image

B.T.W, this is the grid component in web projects

Re: Grid Component (web dev) - detail view in pop up (new window)

        Tony,

Go to the link field in the grid section, not the detail section. But that is where I start to have problems.

I specify New Window, and that creates an error that the detail view can't be editable if it is to be shown in a new window.

OK, so I checked Editable in the grid, which I think is how you make the detail section not editable.

        Then I get this error
Error: Your component does not have a Detail View, but you have a control that is formatted as a Detail View link. Please correct this. Control name: ID
Looks like I am getting balled up. I hope to have 3 editable fields in the grid, and the rest as labels. Then I want to be able to link to a detail view of the record where all of the fields could be edited.

        Bill.

          Tony,

I don't have this working yet, but I wanted to update you with what I am trying now. Dan Blank suggested using a link address of "Computed from values in the Grid" as opposed to "New window". Then check out the options in "Link address". You will need to build a new component and page for the new window. Then point to it and filter for the correct record.

          Bill.

Sorry for doing what I always promised not to do - point out the 'answer' without testing first. I've never opened the deatail view in a new page, but knew the option was there.

One thing though, if you check the option to hide the main grid when the detail opens, in appearance isn't that just like going to a new window?

In my case, I want 3 of the fields in the grid to be updatable, then link to the detail record in the rare case that other fields need to be edited. But if the grid is editable, the option to display a detail part is disabled.

Maybe the attached example will help!

                    Dan

On closer inspection of your example, I have a problem in creating a 3 column layout of the detail fields in the new window (as you normally can on a detail view). This is due to the component "comment" being a basic grid without the detail option, and this means there is no option to make it a 3 column layout ( I have about 22 fields in the detail)

I understand, in a basic grid, because it is a listing of records, it does not make sense to have a column layout option. I have tried to set up the "comment" component with a detail view but it crashes

So, do you have another suggestion on how to do this, as my detail in the new window, using your example is one line spanning miles across the page.

                    Thanks
                    Tony

Not sure where you're going but you can have multi column layout in any grid, regardless of if it has detail section or not. Only requirement is that the Grid Layout under Component Type NOT be tabular.

                        Hi Tony,

The Grid component has 3 options for a grid layout. The first is tabular which is the default, the second is columnar, and the third is stacked columnar. So why not use one of the last two layouts. Then your grid component will go down instead of across.

If you have the time (and the courage?) you can link to a dialog component instead of a grid. For an example, follow this link

                          http://www.mindkicks.com/democo/login.a5w

Login using one of the logins listed and then select 'CARs' off the menu.

The CAR Log is a grid component, but if you select the yellow arrow to 'Edit' it takes you to a dialog component. The fields are populated in the initialize event. The added advantage is a bit more speed.

I like this, it seems to be a more versatile option and the page loads faster.

Is there a chance you can let me have a code example for the initialize event on one of the fields populated when the detail form loads
