Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Cancel New Record Event

    When you start creating a new record and then press "ESC" prior to saving of the record, Alpha5 will present a prompt asking "Are you sure you want to lose your changes". I would like to change the value of a variable if the user clicks yes. If no is click I want to do nothing.

    I am assuming that there is an event that I can use to execute my code, but am at a lose as to what event it is or how to determine what events are firing during that time.

    Re: Cancel New Record Event

    Andrew, I think this is going to be difficult.

    I'd try to use the OnKey event for your form to trap the ESC key and prevent it from canceling the ENTER. Instead, I'd popup a message box asking the user to confirm that they want to cancel, and depending upon their answer I'd do the processing you need and then let the script cancel the pending new record, or if they don't want to cancel do nothing.

    Later:

    Code:
    if a_user.key.value = "{ESC}"
    	a_user.key.handled = .T.
    	IF a_user.key.event = "down"
        	if parentform.mode_get() = "ENTER"

           	 	result = ui_msg_box("Cancel?","Cancel pending new record ?",UI_YES_NO)
            	if result = ui_yes_selected then
                         '[COLOR="Red"]do your processing here, then[/COLOR]
                 	     parentform.cancel()
                    else
                	     msgbox("","User selected no. So return to editing.")

            	end if

        	end if
        end if

    end if

      Tom-

      Thank you for the help. I had thought about doing a key capture and then forcing my code to run, but that will only solve the problem if the user cancels via the "ESC" key.

      I believe that if the user where to close the form prior to saving the record that I will need to execute my code at that point as well.

      Is there any other way, that i am not thinking of, that a user can cancel a new record prior to saving it?

        Users are endlessly creative.

        I think you're going to have to experiment with the menu and tool bar buttons displayed on your form to see what they might choose.

        Unless there's something on the tool bar or in your menu that will do a cancel I should think that trapping the ESC key, and then trapping the form's CanExit event would just about cover it.

          Tom couldn't he use the OnKey to trap the ESC key so it does nothing and that way force the user to employ a button on the form to Cancel instead? Then he could run his script from the button.

            Hello, Robin.

            I don't understand your question since I've recommended using the OnKey event to trap the ESC key in earlier posts in this thread. -- tom

              Tom,
              You suggested putting his code in the OnKey script. I was thinking, couldn't he just stop the normal action of the ESC key there and put his script in a button instead? What would the OnKey script be to do only that?

                Code:
                'Date Created: 16-May-2007 11:32:24 AM
                'Last Updated: 16-May-2007 11:32:24 AM

                if a_user.key.value = "{ESC}"
                	a_user.key.handled = .T.
                end if
                This will trap the ESC key regardless of the form's mode. Yes, you could put a button on the form to cancel pending edits, but it should check the mode before canceling. If the mode is VIEW you don't want to CANCEL, if you see what I mean.

                  Re: Cancel New Record Event

                  Thanks Tom, I always do "something" in my OnKey scripts and had not tried just throwing the key away and was not sure how to do that. Its always the simple things that get convulted... (in MY mind, ie!)
