Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Display text file in browser

    I can use the genie to get a pdf report to display in the browser. But I am having problems doing the same with a text file.

    Have tried both of the following in an AfterValidate event without success.

    currentform.RedirectTarget = session.session_url + "myfile.txt?" + time("hms3")
    and
    response.redirect(session.session_url + "myfile.txt?"+time("hms03"))

    The file does display correctly if I manually enter the url.

    In a previous thread Lenny said to do it this way
    Code:
    <%a5
    source="[PathAlias.adb_path]XFER"+"\\"+fn
    'tell the browser you are about to send plain text
    response.mime_type = "text/plain"
    'send the text
    ? get_from_file(source)
    %>
    But I don't know if this type of syntax can be used in AfterValidate of a grid. At least it does not work for me.

    Hi Bill,

    I haven't tested this, just going from memory.

    I think you need:

    Code:
    response.redirect(session.session_url + myfile.txt+"?"+time("hms03"))
    You need to move the " from the front of myfile.txt to the end and add a +. I have not tried text files, so I cannot comment on that.

    Have Fun,

      Re: Display text file in browser

      After some testing, the problem seems to be the IF statement.

      Code:
      if file.exisits(export_filename)
      	response.redirect(session.session_url + export_name)
      else
      	response.redirect("operationerror.htm")
      end if
      Neither of these pages are displayed from inside the IF statement. However, outside the IF statement, each displays just fine.

      Writing a trace file gives me
      Code:
      export_filename= C:\A5Webroot\session_folders\b63eae1cf70e4a46bc42e20777831993\to_safeschools.txt
      This is where the file exists. Any problem with the IF statement?

      2nd question.

      Why does the report genie create a url with
      + time("hms3")

      For displaying my text file, both of these work, and I prefer the url without the time stamp.
      response.redirect(session.session_url + export_name+"?"+time("hms03"))

      response.redirect(session.session_url + export_name)

      Bill.

        Well, the first problem was a syntax error. exisits should be exists. debugging on the web side is slower, for me, than on the desktop side.

        Now on the the 2nd question.

        Why does the report genie create a url with
        + time("hms3")

        Bill.

          Re: Display text file in browser

          The timestamp is appended to make the URL unique each time that your code is executed. Because you have no control over the browser's cache settings, this ensures that the file is reloaded from the server each time.

          Without this, it is possible that the browser would see the URL as one which it has previously loaded and decide to just display the locally cached version instead of getting the possibly changed file from the server. This is Internet Explorer's default configuration.

          Depending on your application, loading the cached file may be just fine. But if it is possible that the file could be changed and should be reloaded, having something on the URL to make it unique is helpful.

            Lenny,

            Something I never understood. Why doesn't this principle also apply to grids?
