Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Table events not firing

While working in a master database I want to copy record changes to an external table (i.e. a table in a different database). In the database that holds the external table I have established record level events to perform audit trails.

When I copy my record to the external table I use table.open() to grab the table, then I use the Property_from_string() to write the record. Then I close the table.

By modifying the record in this format the CanSaveRecord and CanDeleteRecord events are not executing. Is this because the table is part of an external database? Do table events only work if the table is included in the database?

    Re: Table events not firing

I don't think it's a question of whether the table is part of the database or not, it's a question of what field rules are enforced when record entry/changes are made via xbasic on a table opened with the table.open command.

I hadn't checked this before but, even if a table is part of the database, the can save event, for example, does not fire when a record is opened and then changed via xbasic. If, on the other hand, you make the change interactively in the default browse, the event does fire. I guess that A5 considers the "Can" events to be part of the "ui" field rules which are not enforced during xbasic changes.

Take a look at "honor_field_rules" in the on-line help.

      Re: Table events not firing

Thank you for pointing me in the direction to answer my question.

From my reading it appears that if I reference a table via
      Code:
      tbl1 = table.current()
Then the field rules may be honored.

If the table is opened via
      Code:
      tbl2 = table.open("some_table")
Then the field rules will not be honored.

So I guess that answers my original question. Is there a way that I can via xbasic force a table to fire its field rules when the table is opened via Table.open()? If not then I need to work out a different method to handle the audit log.

Just as an FYI I am using the
      Code:
      addin.run("audit_trail")
      and
      Code:
      Addin.run("audit_trail_deleteRecord")
      to perform auditing.

Is it possible to call the audit functions from outside of the field rules?

        Re: Table events not firing

You'll have to make special provisions in xbasic each time you write to the table outside the gui.

One table in our app also has an extensive audit trail capability in field-rule based code. All processes that entail changes to that table (outside of the set based forms used for data entry) run similar code to keep the audit trail current.
