Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Installing on Windows Vista

When V6 came out you had to share certain controls when installing it on Win 2000 or Xp machines. Are there any files in Alpha5V8 that need to be shared or done something with in order to work in Windows Vista?

Install logged in as Administrator and you should be all set.

      Re: Installing on Windows Vista

I'm glad someone responded on this. I have a client that is on Windows Vista and is getting the following error messages.

When I start I'm getting an error saying running 'startup 100' register controls

In the menu items section I'm getting an error 1077 and error 1080 in a box that says alpha five. I can load a few menu items before I start getting the errors, then I roboot and can do a few more before I get the errors.

I'm assuming you're installing a runtime version? Either way, first make sure you have the LATEST PATCH. Then, use control panel and do an uninstall of Alpha 5. Then, make sure you are logged in as ADMINISTRATOR and re-install the program.

Alpha 5V8 was designed to run with Vista, and you shouldn't have a problem.

I've been running A5V8 on a Vista Home Premium laptop for several weeks now with no problems. FWIW. I find Vista to be annoying, with no real added value over XP. At the time a bought my laptop, though, you couldn't find a new one with XP.

Fred, you didn't say how you are installing A5. Are you using the install file from Alpha or have you included the A5 runtime program in your own install routine?

IF the files need to be registered (I don't know if they still do or not), the A5 installer will handle it automatically but you may have to change some settings in your install program to register them - or get a different install creator that can handle it if yours can't.

              Thanks Cal

I use Astrium and it works great with everything I used it for. The original problem was with the Windows 2000 installes where the A5Controls.dll and A5ContextEval.dll needed to be registered and the install program I use does that. My big question is what files in V8 need to be registered in Vista? I include the Runtime Enterprise and program files in one folder as I have for years now which has always worked great. Now my user is getting the errors listed above and it is refering to registering controls.

                Bob,

Get your hands wrapped around the book "Windows Vista Secrets" by Brian Livingston and Paul Thurrot; You'll quickly learn the benefits of Vista... it's really technically much better than XP - they are headed to a more UNIX-Like opearating system, it's just going to take a while to shake out the remenants of DOS...

                  Re: Installing on Windows Vista

                  Hi Shawn,

Do I have to read the book, or can I just take your word for it? The main thing that's driven me mad with Vista is just the simple fact that they move things ('Run' button comes to mind) that have been in one place since at least W98 and now they've decided that the Accessories folder is a better place for it. And, of course, there's no manual or pamphlet explaining "What's New", etc.

You're right I should read the book, but Microsoft bashing is satisfying in it's own way...

                    Re: Installing on Windows Vista

For many people using Vista this may be well known but there are a number of new Vista users I've run across in my business who do not appreciate the value of the Search box located on the Start menu. It's the box at the bottom of the start menu where the cursor lands when the start menu is opened. You can type the name (or part of the name) of any program, file, picture, etc. in that box and, voila, a list will appear in the menu with possible matches. For instance, type "run" in the search box and the "Run" utility will appear. If you're not familiar with it give it a try, it really does simplify finding your way around.

Of course it's not as much fun or as satisfying as bashing Microsoft but ............ :-)

                      Hi Bruce,

Thanks for the very useful tip. It's impressive, too, that Microsoft has added this progressive lookup for us (see, I can't stop...).

                        Hi Bob,

I understand your joy of MS bashing, but the book is worth it... I have no choice but to learn Vista, since I'm a support tech by trade (DB design is just an enjoyable offshoot). The first several chapters alone will get you rethinking the new product and, like it or not, MS has adopted it. It's like trying to stop an elephant rolling down a hill with a block of wood... not gonna happen... Like it or not, VIsta is here to stay, so you might as well get your hands dirty!

                          Hey Bob,

Using the Windows Key+R still brings up the Run dialog and is faster than searching for the mouse with one hand and then start typing what you need. I finally got used to it a few Windows versions ago and my hand thanks me.
