Filter search part of grid with variable

Hello Everyone,

I have two .a5w pages with a grid on each page.
Page 1 with grid 1 and page 2 with grid 2

Page 1 display a list of categories and i have linked the category id to grid 2, so if i click on "shoes" for example, page 2 with grid 2 show records filtered on "shoes". This is working good.

On grid 2 I have defined a search part to enable the user to further refine the search, search "type" of "shoes" on grid 2 for example.
The search part has a field which is a dropdown box based on a .dbf table which contains a category id field and a "type of shoes" field. The user only see the "type of shoe" values.

What I would like to do, is to filter this search field based on the same value passed by page 1 grid 1. For this example it will be "shoes". So when the user click the dropdown box to search, it will only show the records filtered by "shoes"

What is the best way to do this? I have never done this before.
1. Would it be best to create and populate a session variable on page 1 based on the value selected by the user and reference that session variable on the filter field in grid 2?
2. Where do I create and populate this variable?

I have done the following so far:
1. I have created a application variable called "brandname" and set the value to "shoes"

2. On page 2 I have added the following code:
with tmpl_grd_prdct
componentName = "grd_prdct"
searchfield_info[3].dropdownbox.filter = "mk_brnme = " +quote(brandname)
end with

This do the trick for now, it filters the search field correctly, but this is with a static value defined in the application variable section.

How would I populate the brandname variable with the user selected category id value on page 1 which contains grid 1(list of categories)?

Here is the solution to this issue for those who would like to use it some time:

On the "grid 1"-component I have defined the following in the linking field (category id) that will open page 2 which contains grid 2.
1. I added a variable called "session.brandname" which will be populated with the value selected by the user when he click on the category link.
prdct.a5w?session.brandname={Ca_Brnme}&grd_prdct_filter=P_caid="{Ca_Id}"

On page 2 I have added the following:
with tmpl_grd_prdct
componentName = "grd_prdct"
searchfield_info[3].dropdownbox.filter = "mk_brnme = " +quote(session.brandname)
end with

Here I override the search field filter expression which will only show the records based on the category selected on page 1

The result is page 2 only show the records filtered by the category value and the search field part"a dropdownbox" on page 2 have the same filter allowing the user to see values in the dropdown based on the same category.
