Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Can't add new child records because parent grid has no records

    I have created 2 tables:

    1. invoice_header.dbf
    2. invoice_detail.dbf

I have created 3 web components:

    1. wc_invhd.a5wcmp which contains grid with columnar type and updateable

    2. wc_invdetail.a5wcmp which contains grid with tabular type and updateable

    3. wc_invoice.a5wcmp which contains grid-linker that links wc_invhd and

    wc_invdetail. Child component is wc_invdetail.

I have created invoice.a5w page and inserted component: wc_invoice.a5wcmp

Then I run Internet Explorer and navigate to the web page: invoice.a5w
I fill in some data in the header grid ( wc_invhd ) and then I fill in some data

into the first row of the detail grid (wc_invdetail).

But after I click the "Submit" button, I get the following error message:

Error: Can't add new child records because parent grid has no records.

What have I done wrong ? Please help me.

Your help is highly appreciated and best regards,

Re: Can't add new child records because parent grid has no records

you must save first the information n the parent grid

if you fill the parent grid and then the child grid then hit save on the child grid, the information on the parent grid will not be saved and thats why you see that error message.

always make sure that a record on the parent grid is selected.
    Cheers

Can't add new child records because parent grid has no records

          Hi JackLim in Singapore,
I'm glad to receive your message.

After some days trying by myself, I've got the answer by myself as follow:

          1. create grid component "invoice header view" to show invoice header data
          2. create grid component "invoice detail add" to add data to invoice detail grid
          3. create grid linker "invoice link" to link "invoice header view" and "invoice detail add"
          4. create columnar Invoice header grid and set properties to Add Records only. Set "update settings - target page" to "invoice detail.a5w" page

"invoice detail.a5w" page contains grid linker "invoice link" which links 2 grid components:
          invoice_header_view and invoice_detail_add.

So each time, the user has to create the Invoice Header and clicks submit, the computer will then show the newly created invoice header, then click on the row in the "invoice header view" to add data to "invoice detail".

          Hope this helps,
          Andi Hidajat

            Hi

I have tried my self and do some study too.. I think web based this is the only way to do it.

If u create a Invoice Header Page and After the User click Submit to redirect to the Invoice Detail Page, how to transfer the HDR ID and 2nd Page by using the session.

Can u show me how u do it? I am appreciate that...
            Many Thanks.

Re: Can't add new child records because parent grid has no records

Invoice Header id is automatically detected by Alpha5 if we use grid linker and until now I haven't used session variable to transfer the HDR id to the second page (invoice detail).
