Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      I would've liked to have seen the application, but didn't see your post until now, and it's too late. I'm particularly interested in seeing how you used Google maps. Any chance you'll open it back up for viewing?

        I just saw this now and would have liked to see the application, too.
        Maybe those who saw and left also read the message that said it would be up for 12 hours and thought they had lots of time, not 8 minutes, to comment ????

            Peter,

            You seem to forget that when you first posted this it was 3:10 AM here where I live (actually was asleep then--go figure! :) ). And 12 hours later it was 3 in the afternoon and I was not done working for the day yet... although I sure wish I was as it was a beautiful day that I missed out on.

            I do agree that anyone who visited the site should have done as requested and leave a comment or at least acknowledged your efforts....and helping people can be a fairly thankless job at times but you do have to know that most of us here do appreciate everyone's efforts at doing so even though at times the thank yous are not given as they should be.

            You can put me on the list as one who would have liked to have visited your site to see an Alpha Web application in action.
            Mike

                Peter, if it is any consolation, I've had my web demo up since 2004 and probably one out of a thousand visitors make any comments. No one has ever clicked the Email the Webmaster on the site in three years. But I'm also a guilty party on your application, sorry.

                  Have a look, let me know about the speed.

                    Peter,

                    Thanks for putting the site back up.

                    The speed is as good as most sites I visit--not instantaneous but rare to find a site that is...and the slight wait period of loading is not to the point of being irritating at all.

                    Here are some things I noticed that you may or may not be aware of:

                    You have on your media details page a small note to close the page on exit. It would be a bit more intuitive to have a button that maybe said "Back to Main Menu" or something similar--I was hesitant to close it until I made sure that the main page was in a separate window...but then this may just be me!

                    I also noticed that when a search of various things came up with nothing all that was seen was a blank page just like when a page has not quite finished loading....so sat there until I was fairly certain it was not going to find anything! :) Am wondering if a notice of some kind could be used to indicate a null search for user friendliness.

                    On the Media Details page I noticed some numbers in the left margin of the Primary Contacts area slightly greyed out.???

                    All-in-all a very respectable site.

                    Now had better be off to work!

                      Peter,

                      You have built a very nice site. Easy to use with a minimum of learning needed. I like the way you navigate through the site and only show what's necessary at each step.

                      I had seen a post earlier about google maps, but hadn't considered the possibilities. Now that I've seen what you've done, I can think of all kinds of ways to use this in some of my work. I may be back to ask how you did that!

                      Thank you for sharing that with us.

                        Peter,

                        Thanks for re-opening your database! Nice site - very easy to understand and navigate. There were no speed issues for me.

                        Linking to Google Maps is something I'd really like to include in the database I'm currently working on. I've read online that it's not as easy to link to a Google map as it is to one on Mapquest or Yahoo. Any tips on linking up to Google that you'd like to share?

                        Thanks again for letting me have a look at your work!

                          The site is reasonably fast. I don't think it is any slower, than say, Dell, when ordering a new machine and searching options, etc. Some of the lookups (or all of them) open up slightly too small - I'm using FireFox. Also, some lookups (like the one for magazines) don't give you a sense of how many entries there are. Personally, i prefer the navigatior with the the page # total - e.g. [2 of 17]. This gives the user a sense of what they're up against. Useful for the random searcher, I think. Over all, nice job.

                            I thought the speed was quite acceptable...not a distraction like many sites offer. Google Maps is a great feature.

                            I initially logged on using Firefox and found that there were several object placement/layout problems. For example,

                            - text for your Nav bar on button 4 ran off the bar
                            - text for other buttons exceeded the button width
                            - multiple problems on your "Media Entry Details" page to the extent I couldn't easy understand the layout.

                            No problems that I saw with Explorer 6 or 7. Nice site. Easily navigated. Thanks for the look!

                              Many thanks to everyone, I'll take all the contructive advice on board.

                              With FireFox, well that's an Alpha problem, I had to choose not to compromise my application, I just deliver it using stock tandard functions And if FireFox does not do it the same as Explorer then Alpha needs to fix it.

                              There is no magic in the maps just a bit of later thinking.

                              In the grid create a calculated field to do the job, then link to it.

                              Code:
                              Search_all   = if(AKA<>"",ALLTRIM(Name)+" ("+ALLTRIM(Aka)+")",Name)
                              Full_Address = ALLTRIM(Address1)+" "+ALLTRIM(Address2)+" "+ALLTRIM(Suburb)+" "+ALLTRIM(State)+" "+ALLTRIM(Postcode)+IF(Phone_Main<>""," Tel:"+Phone_Main,"")+IF(Fax_Main<>""," Fax:"+Fax_Main,"")
                              Google_Map   = "http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q="+URLENCODE(ALLTRIM(Address2)+"+"+ALLTRIM(Suburb)+"+"+ALLTRIM(State)+"+"+ALLTRIM(Postcode)+"+"+"Australia")
                              Google_image = "http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q="+URLENCODE(ALLTRIM(Address2)+"+"+ALLTRIM(Suburb)+"+"+ALLTRIM(State)+"+"+ALLTRIM(Postcode)+"+"+"Australia")+"&spn=0.01421,0.027122&t=h&om=1&iwloc=addr"
                              Google       = IF(Suburb<>"","Map","")
                              Hybrid_map   = IF(ALLTRIM(media_header->Suburb)="","","Hybrid")
                              I use the Google and Hybrid_map strings to display what the user will click on, if there is no map, then the string is blank, so nothing to click.

                              Again, thanks everyone.
