Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Validate double entry

    I may be missing something obvious, but I don't find in Help or msg board how to compare 2 fields on a dialog to validate they are the same.

    I have email and email2 fields on the same dialog component. On email2 field I want to do a custom validation that
    CurrentValue = ? (email)

    Can't use {email} as is used in templates.

    Bill.

    Bill,
    This might help, it compares the 2 emails, I thought the easiest way was to send a jpg of the parameters.
    Good Luck

      Bill,

      Here's a bunch of example error trapping for the Validate event of a dialog. The model you want is in the first elseif statement.

      Code:
      if (session.Changepassword = "") .or. (session.Changepassword2 = "") then
          currentform.has_error = .t.
          currentform.error_message = "All fields must be filled."
      elseif session.Changepassword <> session.Changepassword2 then
       	currentform.has_error = .t.
        	currentform.error_message = "Passwords do not match."
      elseif session.Customer_ID = "demo" then
        	currentform.has_error = .t.
        	currentform.error_message = "You can't change the Demo password."
      elseif len(session.Changepassword) < 5 then
        	currentform.has_error = .t.
        	currentform.error_message = "Password must have a length of at least five and have at least one alpha character."
      elseif isnumber(session.Changepassword) = .t. then
        	currentform.has_error = .t.
        	currentform.error_message = "Password must have a length of at least five and have at least one alpha character."
      elseif *any(session.Changepassword, session.Customer_ID) = .t. then
        	currentform.has_error = .t.
        	currentform.error_message = "Password cannot contain the Customer ID."
      end if

      if currentform.has_error = .t. then

      else
      ... your code
      end if

        Re: Validate double entry

        Thanks Phil. You got my rusty brain moving. Using your approach with a Heading, I could display the error but could not trap it to stop the submit button.

        Also thanks to steve. So since I had moved away from the email2 field validate, that got me to using the form Validate event which lets me trap the error. Then I saw Steve's reply, and now I need some tips on the finer points of the syntax. I used
        Code:
        if CurrentForm.Controls.Email <> CurrentForm.Controls.Email2
        	CurrentForm.Controls.Email2.Has_Error = .t.
        	CurrentForm.Controls.Email2.Error_Message = "Emails do not match"
        end if
        How does that differ from your use of Session.(fieldname)?

        Also just so I am clear, custom validation on a dialog control itself can compare with a constant or with an external table (cross file validation), but not from a value in another control on the current form? That must be done in form validation.

        Bill.

          Re: Validate double entry

          The only difference between session.fieldname and just fieldname is how you set the scope in the properties for each field on the dialog. They are either local or session.

          Yes on your last paragraph. You can however use some javascript to validate client-side as they type. But you'd have to research that. You can see where it says "client side validation' for each of the dialog controls. I haven't used that.

            Re: Validate double entry

            My approach would catch the error on the spot. I am going to include some of the same checks Steve had so if the user ignored my error message then it would catch it on the submit.

            By the way Steve, when going thru your code I was looking to see if were checking the amount of water in the sink. You didn't miss anything with your checks. Job well done....

              Ah yes, client side vs. server side. Us desktop guys need to put a sign on the monitor!
