Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    problem with parentform.name?

    Hi!

    I generated an Action Script to put text in an RTF Memo field. When I ran it I got the error message:ERROR: Argument is incorrect data type.

    The code generated was: var = obj(parentform.name(16)+":"+"Rtf_txt").

    Experimenting with the code determined that both:

    ?parentform.name(16) -- or any value you supply
    ?topparent.name(16)

    gives this error: ERROR: Argument is incorrect data type

    I just applied the latest patch this AM.

    Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Re: problem with parentform.name?

    Dave, I don't see this code or this error using the "Add text to RTF memo field" action in the "Fields" category of action scripting. When prompted to supply the text to be entered I entered: "Tom: "+parentform.name()

    when I push the button the action script does not throw an error and the correct form name is supplied to the RTF field.

    You must be doing something differently. How about zipping a copy of the database and posting it here with a trail map showing us how to find the button / script?

      Re: problem with parentform.name?

      Hi!

      Thanks for the reply. Other than the form there is nothing in the database! There is no data in the table. It consists of a single table named rtf_tab with a single column which is named rtf_txt which is a rich text memo field with a width of 10.

      I created a form named rtf2 and selected default form.

      With the form in design mode I went into the code editor and selected
      create new script using action scripting (so I could see what kind of code it generated for handling RTF memo fields :). From there I added a new step and selected "Add Text to an RTF memo field" from the right hand list. I followed the wizard and selected the form and field and put "Hi" in for the text. I than ran the form from the designer, then ran the action script which gave the error. The field had no text in it when I ran the script. I converted the Action Script to in-line XBASIC code to track down the error, tried a few things and then posted it here.

      Here is all of the code generated for the Action Script, line 24 is the one that fails:

      Code:
      Insert text into a RTF memo field: 'Rtf_txt' in rtf2
      DIM window_name as C
      window_name = ":"+"rtf2"
      DIM varP_Object as p
      'Get a pointer to the specified window
      varP_Object = obj(window_name)
      'Check if the specified window exists
      if .not. is_object(varP_Object) then
      	ui_msg_box("Error","The window '"+window_name+"' does not exist.",ui_stop_symbol)
      else
      	Dim TextToInsert as c
      	Dim FontNameSizeAttrib as c
      	Dim InsertPos as n
      	Dim FontColor as c
      	TextToInsert = "hi"
      	FontNameSizeAttrib  = "Arial,8"
      	InsertPos = -1
      	FontColor = "WinText"

      	Dim TempObj as p
      	dim readonly_flag as l
      	'Get a pointer to the Object on the Form/Browse that has the RTF memo field.
      	' The line below is the one that fails.
      	TempObj = obj(parentform.name(16)+":"+"Rtf_txt")
      	'Check if the RTF memo is readonly
      	readonly_flag = TempObj.field.readonly
      	if readonly_flag = .t. then
      		ui_msg_box("Error","Cannot insert text into RTF Memo field '"+"Rtf_txt"+"' because it is read-only",UI_STOP_SYMBOL)
      		end
      	else
      		dim Tbl as p
      		'Get a pointer to the table for the RTF memo field
      		Tbl = tempobj.Field_Get().table_get()
      		dim MemoFieldName as c
      		'Get the name of the RTF memo field (note: the field name is not necessarily the same as the object name on the form/browse)
      		MemoFieldName = tempobj.field_get().name_get()
      		'Call the insert_text_in_rtf_memo() function to insert the text into the RTF memo field.
      		insert_text_in_rtf_memo(Tbl,MemoFieldName,TextToInsert,InsertPos,FontNameSizeAttrib,FontColor)
      		'Now activate the RTF memo, or else it will not show the newly inserted text
      		tempobj.activate()
      		'now set the insertion point after the text just entered (tempobj.topparent gets a pointer to the form in which the object is contained)
      		if InsertPos = -1 then 'inserting at end of field
      			tempobj.varP_Object.cursor_set(9999999)
      		else
      			tempobj.varP_Object.cursor_set(InsertPos + len(TextToInsert))
      		end if
      	end if

      end if
      If you really want the DB posted let me know. Maybe you can look at the forms, etc. in ways that I can't.

      Thanks again for all your help!

        Re: problem with parentform.name?

        Hi Again!

        I created and saved a new database 'xxx' with table 'qqq' and rich text memo field 'zzz'.

        Next I created a default form named 'www' and saved that.

        3rd I went to the code tab of the control panel and tried to create a new action script. Added a new step and again selected 'add text to an rtf memo' from the right hand list. I selected the 'www' form from the list in the wizard and then selected the 'zzz' field from the object name list (which it showed as 'Zzz'); and put 'bbb' in the text box. When I clicked next I got the error message 'Invalid Object'. No matter what I do I cannot get around this error.

        This is the Enterprise version of A5V8 and it has been activated. I applied the latest patch this AM. XP SP2.

        Since I cannot save the action script I did not attach the database.

        I really appreciate the help and suggestions!

          Re: problem with parentform.name?

          Dave, I think the action scripting genie assumes the action will be run from within the context of the open form. You're running it from the code page of the control panel. I don't think the script knows what "parentform" means when run from the code page. The script doesn't have a parent form, if you see what I mean.

          Put a button on your form and run your script from there.
