Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Browse object - click sorts by column

I have a single form that is based on a set of 3 tables. The form has two browse objects that have been configured to enable sorting of the data based on the "clicking of the column title".

The issue that I am having is that when you click on a column to sort, it performs a sort but acts like it is also filtering data. A second click will give you a different subset of the data in a different order.

What do I need to do in order to enable the column sort, but not lose display of records based on the sort?

    Andrew,
I don't know what the issue is/was, but I had to rebuild the set and make a new form for it to work. I like to throw in a parent browse to get the full jist of what's happening.

One piece of advice, which you will see I did, is convert your linking fields to Character type. Unless you are going to perform mathmatical functions on a field value, the field should not be numeric, character works best and works fine with autoincrement.

    Hope this helps.

      Mike:
I am interested in understanding why it is best to use characters instead of integers for auto increment id values. In Access the opposite is stressed. Does it have to do with how Alpha works or is there some other underlying reason?

      Thanks,

        Pete,
I am not the source of this by any means. I am just the messanger of what has been constantly a point made by the far more experienced. I can share with you that my experience is that the overall Xbasic processes are significantly weighted to character, and keeping all fields that are not going to undergo math functions as character makes coding easier. Just a guiding principle forwarded and that seems to work.

          Thank you for the help.

I believe that there is a bug present here relating to linking fields being numeric vs character. I did not convert my field types over to character (personal preference), I changed the linking fields in the set to an expression. In the expression I wrapped all the numeric fields with Str(). By doing this I can leave the field types as numeric and still be able to sort using the column clicks.

I believe, the character vs. numeric issue relates to some inherent weakness in the dbf file type structure. Thus, ID fields (autoincrement or otherwise) and linking values are best as character values. The str() wrapper approach is a good way to handle your situation.

just for the record - I have an app that has been running about 7 years using linking fields as numeric in 4.5. I have an app (same app) in V5 running about 3 years using same. And I have one app (same app) in V8 using same. I have never had any problems whatsoever.

Although, none of the apps use autoincrement - I handle that manually.

Hhhmmm...now you got me to thinking. My linking problem was related to using decimal nos. And I think A5 would truncate the # at the decimal point, so it never worked right. But that was a long time ago...

Just for follow up sake there was a bug and it has been fixed in patch build 1680-3089 release on 14-June-07.

                  Copied from patch notes -

"Embedded Browse - If the embedded browse was based on a one-to-many child table, and if the link between the parent and child table was based on a numeric field, then sorting on a column in the embedded browse would give unexpected results."
