Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Importing Images

    Hello everyone!

    On a table called "Product" there are two fields called "Picture" (jpeg field) and "Picture Location" (the URL of tha Product Image). For every record in this table, i need to import the Images of the products, but because there are a lot of records in it, if i import the images one by one it's going to take forever.

    I was wondering if there is a way to automatically import the images using (maybe) the Picture Location field to find the path. I was thinking about writing a script, but i need to investigate if there's a function that let me import an image to the database.

    Thanks in advance for your attention.

    Just adding an example.
    I began to write the script to import the pictures and i came up with something like this:
    --------------------------------script-------------------------------------
    dim pic as P

    tbl = table.open("product.dbf")
    tbl.fetch_first()
    while .NOT. tbl.fetch_eof()
    tbl.change_begin()
    ?? Here goes the function to import the pictures (something like tbl.Picture = FILE(PictureLocation))
    tbl.change_end()
    end while
    tbl.close()

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------

      But you have to supply the dirve-path-filename before the line is executed. This can be driven by a ui_get_file() or other means.
      There can be only one.

        Thanks for the quick reply.
        I don't understand what's the drive-path-filename. If you mean the location of the file, i tried with the following code but Alpha5 gets frozen if i try to execute it.

        --------------------------------------------------------------------------
        location = "Z:\BVHE\pic\BVE001.jpg" //a test location just for debug, the real path for each picture is in tbl.PictureLocation

        dim pic as P

        tbl = table.open("product.dbf")
        tbl.fetch_first()
        while .NOT. tbl.fetch_eof()
        tbl.change_begin()
        tbl.Picture = image_filename_encode(VAR->location)
        tbl.change_end()
        end while
        tbl.close()
        --------------------------------------------------------------------------

        P.S.: tbl.Picture is a jpeg field (if i open the "product" table and i right-click on the Picture field, i can select "import image" from the menu and select the picture to import).
        tbl.PictureLocation is a character field (the full path of each picture as "C:\pic\pic01.jpg").

          Re: Importing Images

          Hello everyone...
          I've been investigating on this problem so far and i found something that could be very helpful. Taken from Alpha5 user guide:

          Alpha Five lets you add images to your database in two ways.

          Bitmap and JPEG Image fields - store Windows Bitmap (.BMP) or JPEG (.JPG) images in the database. The images are stored in .FPT memo files.

          Image File Reference fields - store the paths and filenames of Windows Bitmap (.BMP) or JPEG (.JPG) images in the database, while the images are stored independently in Windows folders. For many applications this is a more efficient way of storing images, and it can result in much smaller databases.

          I think i have to change structure to my table "product" and in detail i have to change the field "Picture" from JPEG field as it's now to "Image File Reference field".
          I'm pretty sure this has to be done.

          I'll keep investigating on it and i'll post a possible solution as soon as possible.

          Thanks to everyone that replies to this.

          Regards
          MAURO

            Re: Importing Images

            Hey Guys i finally found a solution to the problem.

            There's a function on the events under "FIELDS" category called "Set Image File Name in Linked Image Field". That is exactly what i was looking for.

            I simply set that function for all the items in the table and i get the path from the "PictureLocation" field.

            Now when i select an Item, its Picture is correctly displayed.

            STAN thanks for your reply.
