Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Relative File Path from Var + File Name from record to Create Exterior Program w flag

    Hey guys,

    Here is my setup:

    Dim part1 as C
    Dim part2 as C

    part1 = "c:\folder\"
    part2 = "L12345"

    combinedvar = part1+part2

    system_shell_wait("photo.exe" + combinedvar+."jpg"

    The Command Line looks like this:

    photo.exe c:\folder\L12345.jpg

    For some reason, when I combine part1 and part2, only part1 shows up, so I get:

    photo.exe c:\folder\

    part2 never shows up. Any ideas on how to fix this?

    Check the help file discussion of the line continuation character. Backslash characters require special handling.

    If you need to include a backslash in an expression, use a second backslash to escape it.

    myvar = "\\"
    ? myvar
    = "\"

      Code:

      Dim part2 as C
      Dim combinedvar as C

      part1 = "c:\folder"
      part2 = "L12345"

      combinedvar = part1+chr(92)+part2
      ?combinedvar
      = "c:\folder\L12345"

        Re: Relative File Path from Var + File Name from record to Create Exterior Program w

        Hello Tom,
        I know that. The problem is I have my file path stored in a table. I am calling a character field in a table that stores my file path.

        Code:
        delete pic_path
        dim part1 as c
        delete pic_PC_name
        dim pic_Pc_name as c
        pic_Pc_name = API_GetMachineName()
        tbl=table.open("path_picture")
        indx = tbl.index_primary_put("Pc_name")
        tbl.fetch_find(pic_Pc_name)
        part1 = tbl.imp_path
        tbl.close()
        Let's say that PART1 comes back as "R:\"

        Then I am getting the actual file name from a number that is entered on one of my forms:

        [CODE]DIM window_name as C
        window_name = ":"+"EditPlayerMain_Menu"
        DIM varP_Object as p
        'Get a pointer to the specified window
        varP_Object = obj(window_name)
        PictureLink = varP_Object:Link.text
        part2 = PictureLink+".jpg"

        Let's say that part2 comes back as "L12345.jpg"

        Then I attempt to combine the two

        dim combinedvar as c
        combinedvar = part1+part2

        This is how it should come out
        ? combinedvar = "R:\L12345.jpg"

        I have tried to add a "\" to the variable:

        Code:
        combinedvar = part1+"\\"+part2
        I have also tried Al's suggestion:
        Code:
        combinedvar = part1+chr(92)+part2
        I have also tried to create a calculated field in the table that would add the "\" when a path is selected and that won't work either.

        Any other ideas?

          Thanks Al,
          I've tried that and no dice. I've reposted what else i've done on the thread.

          Thanks!

            Back to what Tom originally said and then acted out in the Interactive Window:

            dim part1 as c
            dim part2 as c
            dim combinedvar as c
            part1 = "C:\folder\\"
            part2 = "L12345"
            combinedvar = part1 + part2 + ".jpg"
            ?combinedvar
            = "C:\folder\L12345.jpg"

            Looks good from here!

              Good! Don't forget to allow for the presence of trailing blank spaces in your table fields when passing field values to your variables. -- tom

                Doug and Tom,
                The problem is that when I use the file select dialog window, and I save the file name into a table, it only leaves ONE "\"

                I've tried to add the SECOND "\", but alas, I can't get it to add it.

                Does that make sense? I know it works in the interactive window, but it does NOT work when you call a file path out of a table. (See my last post)

                Sure, if you hard code it, I can put "C:\folder\\" in my code and it will always go there, HOWEVER, I need a RELATIVE file path, and hard-coding just won't cut it.

                  I guess you're going to have to show us the app, with instructions on how to find the code in question.

                  Belay that. Here's an example that ought to get things going for you. Review the records in the "Paths" table. Then study the script called "Test".

                    Hi Steve,

                    Is this something like you are looking for:

                    vcDefPath = :a5.Get_Path()+chr(92)+"xls"

                    It will, when used as follows

                    ui_get_file("Select Excel file to import", "Excel workbook (*.xls)", vcDefPath +
                    chr(92) + "*.xls", "X")

                    find any xls files in a sub folder where my application is stored.
