Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Chapter Nine: Sleeping with the enemy

Chapter Nine: Sleeping with the enemy.
Alright, let's come at this from a different angel:
How many times you get an error message either you cannot use the table because it is open, or because the table is in use or anything else along these line when you could swear you closed the table or shut down the form...etc.
How many problems relate to record being locked by another session?
But what can you do? you can't take a monkey wrench and fix what goes on behind the scenes, so all you can do is some work around here and there.

These problems will multiply exponentially if you are on a network I presume, and further presume that the moe users the more the problems.

    So what is the answer?
That takes us to chapter ten, or eleven..

Hey, if you are getting tired of this.. remember what Dave would say:
How much did you pay to get in here?!

Believe me, I am not dragging this out nor it's a tease... I am doing my best here. Got other things to do, you know..

Are you sure you didn't work as a stripper in a burlesque show in a prior existence?

          Gabe,

In my opinion, you are cluttering up the board with multiple threads having something to do with each other that should be all in 1 thread, and seem to have no important info to disclose. If you do, get to the point.

I consider this a serious forum for people trying to learn, get help and exchange information. Time for people using Alpha 5 for serious business work is limited and this is clutter (aka spam) on this board.

If you have a design technique, get to it (and it should be in the Database Design section, not here if generic) and keep it in 1 thread not ten (or so).
          Regards,

I am not really sure how to take that?

should be all in 1 thread
I am sure Aaron will combine them. Reason to break them down so if anyone has any comments related to that particular point.

this is clutter (aka spam) on this board.
            Really?
So, why bother reading? Skip over..That's what I do with spam.

Re: Chapter Ten: Late Show with David Letterman

              Gabe,

in chapter one (thread one) you promised an innovative development technique, you are now on chapter 10 and have just talked about stripping a database back to basics, which is where the majority of databases start.

For the sake of the board please stop procrastinating. Ira has made a good point, this should be in the correct forum.
I am sure a lot of people have read each new thread hoping it is the one that gives us this wonderful new information, only to find they have wasted more time.

If you intend to give us the answer, by all means start a new thread - in the correct forum - with the heading of 'the answer is' so that we know what we are looking at not a series of inane drivel!

Thanks Ira - glad to finally see some rational dissent to this useless series. If anyone wants to discuss real issues in a different venue, see my website > Webinars. I've held these Friday Noon weekly for the past month. Open format, discuss anything A5 related while sharing my desktop and on voice conferencing. I draw from examples of my own web and desktop programming as necessary. If the audience are newbies, its free training. If they are seasoned developers, its a high level discussion about design, or particular functions and such. These started out as a showcase purely for my stuff, but its been more fun and more educational to structure it loosely, taking on whatever challenges come up.

I'm sure Aaron has better things to do than monitor the forum for purposes of combining threads and moving them. The occasional poster and everyone makes mistakes, so he occasionally does correct them when he notices, but I'd much rather have him working on A5 bugs, new code and features.

And if someone has specific points related to a thread, that's what the quote buttons are for, as I have done above.

Re: Innovative Development Technique, Chapter 1: The Three Stooges

                    Interesting thread

Not that anything presented so far by Gabe is interesting, but I am always interested in why people do things they do. In this case I can't really figure out the WHY as to this big game that is going on. First we have a declaration that he (Gabe) has left the board and does not have time (better things to do) and then starts dragging out this useless (on the surface) drek about some innovative design concept. So my question to you Gabe, is why??? this method of presenting your new concept? Is this to possibly invoke thought? Is so , not doing a good job. You seem like either a very interesting guy or a complete ******* (use your imagination) (or somewhere in between) Help me out, which is it?

While interesting ... this thread reminds me of Project Xanadu, which Autodesk bought into (payed money for !!) in the late '80's.

I attended a meeting (at Autodesk) of these allegedly highly intellectual, so full of themselves a-holes that babbled on for hours about a structure for a software framework that was in reality a random software walk.

It's now considered the biggest vaporware product in the history of software.

I see you first started this thread about a month ago. The purpose of these
threads is to get help or help others, but so far you speak only of a concept with no specifics. If you have something important to relate, please do so and be specific. Otherwise this thread serves no purpose.

                        We await the "revelation".
