Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Steve's V8 Web Application Showcase

I am showing off several V8 "Modules" that I have just completed. These are intended for use by developers as "drop-in" components, saving you many hours of programming when building web applications.

My new A5 Application Showcase is every Friday at Noon (Pacific time). To join, visit my website at this address: http://alphatogo.com/webinar.htm. I can only take 10 at a time, first come first served. You might comment here, so I know who to expect.

These are 1.0 versions, so I intend to glean advice from participants on how I might improve and package these modules for sale. But its not a training session, I won't be explaining how I did anything.

    Here are the modules

Total User Management (integrated with Security Framework)
    • Security Framework - keep your User table and Security Framework in complete sync.
    • User Detail - view Users in simple grid format with full detail; edit, delete, add, etc.
    • MyAccount a place for your users to manage their own information.
    • New User Registration you can require Double or Single Opt-In.
    • New Users added by Admin you can add users, determine their Security Group, determine their Lockout period if applicable.
    • Update by Admin you can modify your user details including locking them out for some period.
    • System Emails emails users at appropriate stages. Automatic in some cases, toggled by a check box in other cases.
    • Advanced bulk synchronize User table with Security Framework (advanced because it is potentially resource intensive).

    Web Traffic Audit
    • Login Audit Trail record last login in your local User table.
    • Track every page accessed by users including duration on each page.
    • Full Audit Trail - options to audit all activity by user.

    Help Desk
    • Trouble Tickets users can report trouble to your Trouble Ticket system and view history.
    • Text Message Support if appropriate, your users can text message a support cell phone with service request.

    General
    • Behind the scenes hides various aspects depending on Security Group. Comes with standard groups: Developer, SuperAdmin, Admin, and User and Pending.
    • EASY TO MODIFY FULL DOCUMENTATION

    Web Template
    • Comes with a simple web template that can be enhanced or used as is

So, Steve, if I understand this, you have to click on your link at noon (or just before?) on Friday? IOW one cannot sign up in advance. Is that correct?

Re: Steve's V8 Web Application Showcase

I'd love to "sign one up", but I can't since I have no control over who shows up, and it would be first-come-first-serve whether I like it or not -- I can't control it. Now, if I were to charge money for the session.... then there are ways to "reserve a spot". But I don't want to charge for it.

How about this, anyone who makes a note here, I will remind. I intend to have these sessions for the long haul so there's more than one chance. The Forum's not the only audience.

Ok, so the question is, since you can't login now, exactly at what time can you? e.g. is 11:59AM too early?

Re: Steve's V8 Web Application Showcase

          Peter -

The way it works is, at about 5 minutes to noon I start the webex and tele conference. Any one who logs in to the webex conference, up to a total of 10is able to join. I don't know what happens to the 11th user, I think they get reruns of Desperate Housewives.

Any number can join the tele conference. If you are the first, you get music until someone else comes on.

Down the road, if these showcases work out, I can shift to GoToMyMeeting, which allows an unlimited number of attendees.

One purpose of these showcases is to introduce Alpha to new or potential Alpha clients, the other is education. I don't even mind if a developer sends their potential client to watch my showcase. If they are successful, I'll get other developers to show off their projects (you for instance), and on down days, I'll just sit there and program on some assignment, sort of a 'watch a live Alpha programmer' skit.

All of this is part of a program I promised to bring (some other thread) for a new collaborative educational process. If it can bring some business my way, that will help to pay for the time and investment.

Re: Steve's V8 Web Application Showcase

We had the first Application Showcase this afternoon. This came off well enough that I will commit to them every Friday at noon (Pacific). My style is to tailor each session to the needs of those present, not the same show each time. This time around, I showed:

              - Report and Process Scheduler for the Application Server
              - Total User Management for Application Server w/Security Framework
              - Help Desk System for Application Server

You can signup for a web seminar reminder at this page: http://alphatogo.com/webinar.htm

                  Steve,

I can't thank you enough for your invaluable help last Friday with Alpha5 version 8. Your personal instruction via the webinar allowed me to see the correct way to setup the forms and filed names. Additionally your "cheat" sheet with the xbasic coding allowed me to resolve the errors I kept getting and finally move onto the meat of the development with our database. We are leaps and bounds ahead to launching our database. I really appreciate it!

Re: Steve's V8 Web Application Showcase

Steve was a great help yesterday during the webinar. Without going into major details, I had a filtering problem on a lookup using a variable. Steve and I discussed many options but did not come up with a solution as he did not have all the necessary files to duplicate the information.

However, because of the ideas that Steve was mentioning, this morning I was able to take his ideas and I FOUND the solution. Sometimes speaking to someone and not just beating your head against the walls can help.

Once again Steve, thanks a bunch.

                      Steve,

I am hungry to learn more of A5, but am a pretty green novice.

Your Webinar sounds fascinating, but I am wondering if it would be too much above my level. If so, I will feel embarrased if I were one of the 10, and by managing to sign up thereby deprived someone else of deriving greater benefit.

                      Any thoughts please.

                      David

Re: Steve's V8 Web Application Showcase

It's really not a problem. I moderate very well and the number of participants is normally 2 or 3. I'ts a bit of an expirement and I want to let it go wherever it needs to go. Besides, in one respect, as developers get more experienced, their (our) questions can also become more silly because a) we otta know the darn answer, and b) there are a dozen ways to do almost anything; one is the most effecient, but we all develop our skills and styles along different paths and 3) no matter how experienced anyone is, they are still a novice with 60% (+/-) of what Alpha Five can do.
